1 Samuel 17:19-32

19 And Saul and they and all the men of Israel are in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.”

20 So David arose early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper and carried the supplies and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the (A)circle of the camp while the military force was going out in battle lines shouting the war cry. 21 And Israel and the Philistines arranged themselves in battle lines, battle line [a]against battle line. 22 Then David left his (B)baggage in the [b]care of the baggage keeper and ran to the battle line and entered in order to greet his brothers. 23 As he was speaking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine from Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the battle lines of the Philistines, and he spoke (C)these same words; and David heard them.

24 Now all the men of Israel saw the man, and they fled from him and were greatly afraid. 25 And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to [c]reproach Israel. And it will be that the king will enrich the man who strikes him down with great riches and (D)will give him his daughter and make his father’s house [d]free in Israel.”

26 Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, saying, “What will be done for the man who strikes down this Philistine and takes away (E)the reproach from Israel? For who is this (F)uncircumcised Philistine, that he should [e](G)reproach the battle lines of (H)the living God?” 27 And the people spoke to him in accord with this word, saying, “(I)Thus it will be done for the man who strikes him down.”

28 Then Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and (J)Eliab’s anger burned against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I myself know your arrogance and the wickedness of your heart, for you have come down in order to see the battle.” 29 But David said, “What have I done now? Was it not just a word?” 30 Then he turned [f]away from him to another and (K)said the same word; and the people responded to him with the same word as [g]before.

David Puts Goliath to Death

31 Then the words which David spoke were heard. And they told them [h]to Saul, and he sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, “(L)Let no man’s heart fail on account of him; (M)your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

Acts 5:17-26

The Apostles Jailed and Freed

17 But the high priest rose up and those with him (that is (A)the sect of (B)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. 18 And they laid hands on the apostles and (C)put them in a public jail. 19 But during the night (D)an angel of the [a]Lord opened the doors of the prison, and taking them out, he said, 20 “Go, stand and [b]speak to the people in the temple [c](E)the whole message of this Life.” 21 Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple (F)about daybreak and began to teach.

Now when (G)the high priest and those with him came, they called (H)the Sanhedrin together, even all the Council of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the jailhouse for them to be brought. 22 But (I)the officers who came did not find them in the prison, and they returned and reported back, 23 saying, “We found the jailhouse locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors, but we opened it and found no one inside.” 24 Now when (J)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what [d]would come of this. 25 But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!” 26 Then (K)the captain went along with (L)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for (M)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).
