Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Yahweh Answers Job
38 Then Yahweh (A)answered Job out of the [a]whirlwind and said,
2 “Who is this that (B)darkens counsel
By words without knowledge?
3 Now (C)gird up your loins like a man,
And (D)I will ask you, and you make Me know!
4 Where were you (E)when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know understanding,
5 Who set its (F)measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the line on it?
6 On what (G)were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together
And all the (H)sons of God shouted for joy?
34 “Can you raise your voice up to the clouds,
So that an (A)abundance of water will cover you?
35 Can you (B)send forth lightnings that they may go
And say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has (C)given wisdom in the [a]innermost being
Or given (D)understanding to the [b]mind?
37 Who can count the clouds by wisdom,
Or (E)tip the water jars of the heavens,
38 When the dust hardens into a mass
And the clods stick together?
Yahweh Answers Job, “Where Were You?”
The Glory of Yahweh Endures Forever
104 (A)Bless Yahweh, O my soul!
O Yahweh my God, You are very great;
You are (B)clothed with splendor and majesty,
2 Wrapping Yourself with (C)light as with a cloak,
(D)Stretching out the heavens like a tent curtain.
3 [a]He (E)lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters;
[b]He sets up the (F)clouds to be His chariot;
[c]He walks upon the (G)wings of the wind;
4 [d]He makes His [e]angels (H)the winds,
His ministers flaming (I)fire.
5 He (J)founded the earth upon its place,
So that it will not [f]shake forever and ever.
6 You (K)covered it with the deep as with a garment;
The waters were standing above the mountains.
7 At Your (L)rebuke they fled,
At the (M)sound of Your thunder they hurried away in alarm.
8 The mountains went up; the valleys went down
To the (N)place which You founded for them.
9 You set a (O)boundary that they may not pass over,
So that they will not return to cover the earth.
5 For every high priest (A)taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in (B)things pertaining to God, in order to (C)offer both gifts and sacrifices (D)for sins, 2 (E)being able to deal gently with the (F)ignorant and (G)misguided, since he himself also is [a](H)beset with weakness; 3 and because of it, he is obligated, (I)just as for the people, to also offer sacrifices (J)for sins in the same way for himself. 4 And (K)no one takes this honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even (L)as Aaron was.
5 In this way also Christ (M)did not glorify Himself to become a (N)high priest, but He who (O)said to Him,
“(P)You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You”;
6 just as He says also in another passage,
7 He, [b]in the days of His flesh, [c](S)offered up both prayers and supplications with (T)loud crying and tears to the One (U)able to save Him [d]from death, and He [e]was heard because of His (V)reverence. 8 Although He was (W)a Son, He learned (X)obedience from the things which He suffered. 9 And having been made (Y)perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10 being designated by God as (Z)a high priest according to (AA)the order of Melchizedek.
A Request for Status
35 (A)Then James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 And they said to Him, “[a]Grant that we (B)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (C)to drink the cup that I drink, or (D)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink (E)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40 But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; (F)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41 (G)And hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John. 42 And calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not this way among you, (H)but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man (I)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [b]life a ransom for many.”
