New English Translation (NET)
Version
Psalm 144:9-15

O God, I will sing a new song to you.
Accompanied by a ten-stringed instrument, I will sing praises to you,
10 the one who delivers[a] kings,
and rescued David his servant from a deadly[b] sword.
11 Grab me and rescue me from the power of foreigners,[c]
who speak lies,
and make false promises.[d]
12 Then[e] our sons will be like plants,
that quickly grow to full size.[f]
Our daughters will be like corner pillars,[g]
carved like those in a palace.[h]
13 Our storehouses[i] will be full,
providing all kinds of food.[j]
Our sheep will multiply by the thousands
and fill[k] our pastures.[l]
14 Our cattle will be weighted down with produce.[m]
No one will break through our walls,
no one will be taken captive,
and there will be no terrified cries in our city squares.[n]
15 How blessed are the people who experience these things.[o]
How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord.

Song of Solomon 5:2-6:3

The Trials of Love: The Beloved’s Dream of Losing Her Lover

The Beloved about Her Lover:

I was asleep, but my mind[a] was dreaming.[b]
Listen![c] My lover[d] is knocking[e] at the door![f]

The Lover to His Beloved:

“Open[g] for me, my sister, my darling,
my dove, my flawless one!
My head is drenched with dew,
my hair with the dampness of the night.”

The Beloved to Her Lover:

“I have already taken off my robe—must I put it on again?
I have already washed my feet—must I soil them again?”
My lover thrust his hand[h] through[i] the hole,[j]
and my feelings[k] were stirred[l] for him.
I arose to open for my beloved;
my hands dripped with myrrh—
my fingers flowed with myrrh
on the handles of the lock.
I opened for my beloved,
but my lover had already turned[m] and gone away.[n]
I fell into despair[o] when he departed.[p]
I looked for him but did not find him;
I called him but he did not answer me.
The watchmen found me as they made their rounds in the city.
They beat me, they bruised me;
they took away my cloak, those watchmen on the walls!

The Triumph of Love: The Beloved Praises Her Lover

The Beloved to the Maidens:

I admonish you, O maidens of Jerusalem—
If you find my beloved, what will you tell him?
Tell him that I am lovesick![q]

The Maidens to The Beloved:

Why is your beloved better than others,[r]
O most beautiful of women?
Why is your beloved better than others,
that you would admonish us in this manner?

The Beloved to the Maidens:

10 My beloved[s] is dazzling[t] and ruddy;[u]
he stands out[v] in comparison to[w] all other men.[x]
11 His head is like the purest gold.[y]
His hair is curly[z]—black like a raven.
12 His eyes are like doves by streams of water,
washed in milk, mounted like jewels.
13 His cheeks are like garden beds full of balsam trees[aa] yielding[ab] perfume.
His lips are like lilies dripping with drops of myrrh.
14 His arms are like rods of gold set with chrysolite.
His abdomen[ac] is like polished ivory inlaid with sapphires.
15 His legs are like pillars of marble set on bases of pure gold.
His appearance is like Lebanon, choice as its cedars.
16 His mouth is very sweet;[ad]
he is totally desirable.[ae]
This is my beloved!
This is my companion, O maidens of Jerusalem!

The Lost Lover Found

The Maidens to the Beloved:

Where has your beloved gone,
O most beautiful among women?
Where has your beloved turned?
Tell us,[af] that we may seek him with you.[ag]

The Beloved to the Maidens:

My beloved has gone down to his garden,[ah]
to the flowerbeds of balsam spices,[ai]
to graze[aj] in the gardens,
and to gather lilies.[ak]

Poetic Refrain: Mutual Possession

The Beloved about Her Lover:

I am my lover’s[al] and my lover is mine;[am]
he grazes among the lilies.

1 Peter 2:19-25

19 For this finds God’s favor,[a] if because of conscience toward God[b] someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? But if you do good and suffer and so endure, this finds favor with God.[c] 21 For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps. 22 He[d] committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth.[e] 23 When he was maligned, he[f] did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatened[g] no retaliation,[h] but committed himself to God[i] who judges justly. 24 He[j] himself bore our sins[k] in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning[l] and live for righteousness. By his[m] wounds[n] you were healed.[o] 25 For you were going astray like sheep[p] but now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
