Psalm 119:9-16

ב Beth

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping your[a] word.(A)
10 I have sought you with all my heart;(B)
don’t let me wander from your commands.(C)
11 I have treasured your word in my heart(D)
so that I may not sin against you.
12 Lord, may you be blessed;
teach me your statutes.(E)
13 With my lips I proclaim
all the judgments from your mouth.(F)
14 I rejoice in the way revealed by your decrees(G)
as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts(H)
and think about your ways.(I)
16 I will delight in your statutes;(J)
I will not forget your word.

Haggai 2:1-9

Encouragement and Promise

On the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(A) the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people: ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem to you like nothing by comparison?(B) Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel—this is the Lord’s declaration.(C) Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land—this is the Lord’s declaration. Work! For I am with you(D)—the declaration of the Lord of Armies. This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt,(E) and my Spirit is present among you; don’t be afraid.’”

For the Lord of Armies says this: “Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth,(F) the sea and the dry land.(G) I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,”(H) says the Lord of Armies. “The silver and gold belong to me”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. “The final glory of this house[a] will be greater than the first,”(I) says the Lord of Armies. “I will provide peace in this place”(J)—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.

Haggai 2:20-23

Promise to Zerubbabel

20 The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.(A) 22 I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms.(B) I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother’s sword. 23 On that day”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—“I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and make you like my signet ring,(C) for I have chosen you.”(D) This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.

John 12:34-50

34 Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever.(A) So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(B) must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

35 Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer.(C) Walk while you have the light(D) so that darkness doesn’t overtake you.(E) The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.(F) 36 While you have the light,(G) believe in the light so that you may become children of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.(H)

Isaiah’s Prophecies Fulfilled

37 Even though he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill(I) the word of Isaiah(J) the prophet, who said:[a]

Lord, who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm(K) of the Lord been revealed?[b](L)

39 This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:

40 He has blinded(M) their eyes
and hardened their hearts,(N)
so that they would not see with their eyes
or understand with their hearts,
and turn,(O)
and I would heal them.[c](P)

41 Isaiah said these things because[d] he saw his glory(Q) and spoke about him.

42 Nevertheless, many did believe in him even among the rulers,(R) but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue. 43 For they loved human praise(S) more than praise from God.(T)

A Summary of Jesus’s Mission

44 Jesus cried out, “The one who believes in me(U) believes not in me, but in him who sent me. 45 And the one who sees me sees him(V) who sent me. 46 I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me would not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and doesn’t keep(W) them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world(X) but to save the world.(Y) 48 The one who rejects me(Z) and doesn’t receive my sayings has this as his judge: [e] The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.(AA) 49 For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father(AB) himself who sent me has given me a command to say everything I have said. 50 I know that his command is eternal life.(AC) So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me.”(AD)
