Jerusalem Cries over Her Loss

How lonely sits the city [C Jerusalem],
    once so full of people.
She is like a widow,
    once great among the nations [Ps. 122:3].
She was like a queen ·of all the other cities [L among the provinces],
    but now she is a ·slave [forced laborer; vassal].

She [C Jerusalem pictured as a widow] cries loudly at night,
    and tears are on her cheeks.
There is no one to comfort her;
    ·all who loved her are gone [L among all her lovers; C referring to other nations to whom she unfaithfully turned for help].
All her friends have ·turned against [betrayed] her
    and are now her enemies.

Judah has gone into ·captivity [exile; C to Babylon; 2 Kin. 25:8–21; 2 Chr. 36:17–21; Jer. 39:1–10; 51:12–30]
    where she ·suffers [is oppressed/afflicted] ·and works hard [under slavery/harsh servitude].
She lives among other nations,
    but she has found no rest.
Those who ·chased [pursued; persecuted] her caught her
    ·when she was in trouble [L between her distresses].

The roads to ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple] ·are sad [mourn],
    because no one comes for the feasts [C Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles].
·No one passes through her gates [L All her gates are desolate].
    Her priests groan,
her young women are ·suffering [afflicted],
    and ·Jerusalem suffers terribly [L she is bitter].

Her foes are now her masters.
    Her enemies ·enjoy the wealth they have taken [prosper].
The Lord is ·punishing [tormenting; afflicting] her
    for her many ·sins [transgressions].
Her ·children [little ones] have gone away
    as captives of the ·enemy [foe].

The ·beauty [splendor; majesty] of ·Jerusalem [L the daughter of Zion; C the location of the Temple; Ps. 48:1–3]
    has gone away.
Her rulers are like deer
    that cannot find ·food [L pasture].
They ·are weak [L go without strength]
    ·and run from the hunters [L before those who pursue/chase/persecute them].

Lamentations 3:19-26

19 Lord, remember my ·suffering [affliction] and my ·misery [or wanderings; homelessness; 1:7],
    ·my sorrow and trouble [L it is wormwood and gall; 3:15].
20 Please remember me
    and think about ·me [L my life].
21 But I have hope
    when I ·think of this [L return to my mind/heart]:

22 The Lord’s ·love [loyalty] never ends;
    his ·mercies [compassion] never stop.
23 They are new every morning;
    Lord, your ·loyalty [faithfulness] is ·great [abundant; Ps. 33:4; 92:2; 143:1].
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is ·mine [L my lot/portion],
    so I hope in him.”

25 The Lord is good to those who ·hope in [wait for] him,
    to those who seek him.

Psalm 137

Israelites in Captivity

137 By the rivers in Babylon we sat and ·cried [wept; C during the Babylonian exile]
    when we remembered ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple].
On the ·poplar [or willow] trees nearby
    we hung our harps.
·Those who captured us [Our captors] asked us to sing;
    our ·enemies [oppressors] wanted happy songs.
They said, “Sing us a song about ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple]!”

But we cannot sing songs about the Lord
    while we are in this foreign ·country [land]!
Jerusalem, if I forget you,
    let my right hand ·lose its skill [L forget; C its skill of playing a musical instrument].
Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth
    if I do not remember you,
if I do not ·think about Jerusalem
    as my greatest joy [or go up to Jerusalem with joy on my head].

Lord, remember ·what the Edomites did [L the sons of Edom]
    on the day ·Jerusalem fell [L of Jerusalem; Lam. 4:21; Ezek. 25:12–14; 35:5–15; Obad. 11–14].
They said, “Tear it down!
    Tear it down to its foundations!”

·People [L Daughter] of Babylon, you will be destroyed.
    The people who pay you back for what you did to us will be ·happy [blessed].
They will grab your ·babies [little ones]
    and throw them against the rocks.

2 Timothy 1:1-14

From Paul, an ·apostle [messenger] of Christ Jesus by the will of God. ·God sent me to tell about [L …according to] the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.

To Timothy [Acts 16:1–5; 1 Cor. 16:10–11; Phil. 2:19–24], a ·dear [beloved] child to me [1 Tim. 1:2]:

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Encouragement for Timothy

I thank God as I always ·mention [remember] you in my prayers, day and night. I serve him, ·doing what I know is right [with a clear conscience] as my ancestors did. Remembering your tears [C probably at Paul’s departure], I ·want very much [long] to see you so I can be filled with joy. I remember your ·true [sincere] faith. That faith first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I ·know [am sure/persuaded] you now have that same faith. This is why I remind you to ·keep using [rekindle; fan into flames] the gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you [C a way of dedicating someone to Christian service; 1 Tim. 4:14]. [L For] God did not give us ·a spirit [or the Spirit] that makes us ·afraid [timid] but ·a spirit [or the Spirit] of power and love and ·self-control [self-discipline; or good judgment].

So do not be ashamed to ·tell people [testify; bear witness] about our Lord, and do not be ashamed of me, ·in prison for the Lord [L his prisoner; C Paul was in prison in Rome for a second time and would soon be executed]. But suffer with me for the ·Good News [Gospel]. God, who gives us the strength to do that, saved us and ·made us his holy people [L called us to a holy calling]. That was not because of anything we did ourselves but because of ·God’s [L his own] purpose and grace. That grace was given to us through Christ Jesus before ·time began [L eternal times], 10 but it is now ·shown [revealed; manifested] to us by the ·coming [appearing; manifestation] of our Savior Christ Jesus. He ·destroyed [broke the power of; abolished] death, and through the ·Good News [Gospel] he ·showed us the way to have [L illuminated; brought to light] ·life that cannot be destroyed [immortal life; L life and immortality]. 11 I was ·chosen [appointed] ·to tell that Good News [L a preacher/herald] and to be an apostle and a teacher. 12 I am suffering now ·because I tell the Good News [L for this reason], but I am not ashamed, because I know the One in whom I have ·believed [put my trust/faith]. Luke 17:5-10

How Big Is Your Faith?(A)

The apostles said to the Lord, “Give us more faith!”

The Lord said, “If your faith were the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘·Dig yourself up [Be uprooted] and plant yourself in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Be Good Servants

“Suppose one of you has a ·servant [slave] who has been plowing the ground or caring for the sheep. When the servant comes in from working in the field, would you say, ‘Come in and ·sit down to eat [L recline; C the posture for a banquet or formal meal]’? No, ·you [L he] would say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Then ·get yourself ready [or put on your apron; L gird yourself] and ·serve [wait on] me. After I finish eating and drinking, you can eat and drink.’ ·The servant does not get any special thanks [L Does he thank the servant…?] for doing what his master commanded. 10 It is the same with you. When you have done everything you are told to do, you should say, ‘We are ·unworthy [undeserving; worthless] servants; we have only done ·the work we should do [our duty; our obligation].’”
