Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
4 The day came, and Elkanah sacrificed.
(Now[a] he used to give meat portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double[b] portion because he loved Hannah,[c] although[d] the Lord had not enabled her to have children. 6 Her rival used to aggravate her to the point of exasperation,[e] just to irritate her,[f] since the Lord had not enabled her to have children. 7 This is how it would go[g] year after year. As often as she went up to the Lord’s house, Peninnah[h] would offend her in that way.)[i]
So she cried and refused to eat. 8 Then her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why are you crying and why won’t you eat? Why are you so upset?[j] Am I not better to you than ten[k] sons?” 9 So Hannah got up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh.[l]
At the time[m] Eli the priest was sitting in his chair[n] by the doorpost of the Lord’s sanctuary.[o] 10 As for Hannah, she was very distressed.[p] She prayed to the Lord and was, in fact, weeping.[q] 11 She made a vow saying, “O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, if you would truly look[r] on the suffering of your servant,[s] and would keep me in mind and not neglect[t] your servant, and give your servant a male child,[u] then I will dedicate him to the Lord all the days of his life. His hair will never be cut.”[v]
12 It turned out[w] that she did a great deal[x] of praying before the Lord. Meanwhile[y] Eli was watching her mouth. 13 As for Hannah, she was speaking in her mind.[z] Only her lips were moving; her voice could not be heard. So Eli thought she was a drunkard.[aa]
14 Then he[ab] said to her, “How much longer do you intend to get drunk? Put away your wine!”[ac] 15 But Hannah replied, “Not so, my lord! I am a woman under a great deal of stress.[ad] I haven’t drunk wine or beer. But I have poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman.[ae] It’s just that,[af] to this point, I have spoken from my deep pain[ag] and anguish.”[ah]
17 Eli replied, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant the request that you have asked of him.” 18 She said, “May I, your servant, find favor in your sight.”[ai] So the woman went her way and got something to eat.[aj] Her face no longer looked sad.[ak]
19 They got up early the next morning. Then they worshiped[al] the Lord and returned to their home at Ramathaim.[am] Elkanah was intimate with[an] his wife Hannah, and the Lord called her to mind.[ao] 20 Then Hannah became pregnant.
Hannah Dedicates Samuel to the Lord
In the course of time she gave birth to a son.[ap] And she named him Samuel, thinking, “I asked the Lord for him.”[aq]
Hannah Exalts the Lord in Prayer
2 Hannah prayed,[a]
“My heart has rejoiced[b] in the Lord;
my horn[c] has been raised high because of the Lord.
I have loudly denounced[d] my enemies.
Indeed I rejoice in your deliverance.
2 No one is holy[e] like the Lord!
There is no one other than you!
There is no rock[f] like our God!
3 Don’t keep speaking[g] so arrogantly.[h]
Proud talk should not[i] come out of your mouth,
for the Lord is a God who knows;
he[j] evaluates what people do.
4 The bows of warriors are shattered,
but those who stumbled have taken on strength.[k]
5 The well fed hire themselves out to earn food,
but the hungry no longer lack.[l]
Even[m] the barren woman has given birth to seven,[n]
but the one with many children has declined.[o]
6 The Lord both kills and gives life;
he brings down to the grave[p] and raises up.[q]
7 The Lord impoverishes and makes wealthy;
he humbles and he exalts.
8 He lifts the weak[r] from the dust;
he raises[s] the poor from the ash heap
to seat them with princes—
he bestows on them an honored position.[t]
The foundations of the earth belong to the Lord—
he placed the world on them.
9 He watches over[u] his holy ones,[v]
but the wicked are made speechless in the darkness,[w]
for it is not by one’s own[x] strength that one prevails.
10 The Lord shatters[y] his adversaries;[z]
he thunders against them from[aa] the heavens.
The Lord executes judgment to the ends of the earth.
He will strengthen[ab] his king
and exalt the power[ac] of his anointed one.”[ad]
11 And every priest stands day after day[a] serving and offering the same sacrifices again and again—sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest[b] had offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, he sat down at the right hand[c] of God, 13 where he is now waiting[d] until his enemies are made a footstool for his feet.[e] 14 For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are made holy.
15 And the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us, for after saying,[a] 16 “This is the covenant that I will establish with them after those days, says the Lord. I will put[b] my laws on their hearts and I will inscribe them on their minds,”[c] 17 then he says,[d] “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no longer.”[e] 18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Drawing Near to God in Enduring Faith
19 Therefore, brothers and sisters,[a] since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the fresh and living way that he inaugurated for us[b] through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,[c] 21 and since we have a great priest[d] over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in the assurance that faith brings,[e] because we have had our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience[f] and our bodies washed in pure water. 23 And let us hold unwaveringly to the hope that we confess, for the one who made the promise is trustworthy. 24 And let us take thought of how to spur one another on to love and good works,[g] 25 not abandoning our own meetings, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and even more so because you see the day[h] drawing near.[i]
The Destruction of the Temple
13 Now[a] as Jesus[b] was going out of the temple courts, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look at these tremendous stones and buildings!”[c] 2 Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another.[d] All will be torn down!”[e]
Signs of the End of the Age
3 So[f] while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John,[g] and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things[h] happen? And what will be the sign that all these things are about to take place?” 5 Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out[i] that no one misleads you. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’[j] and they will mislead many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.[k] 8 For nation will rise up in arms[l] against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines.[m] These are but the beginning of birth pains.
