Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Death of David
10 Then (A)David slept with his fathers and was buried in (B)the city of David. 11 (C)The days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: (D)seven years he reigned in Hebron and thirty-three years he reigned in Jerusalem. 12 And (E)Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established.
3 Now (A)Solomon loved the Lord, (B)walking in the statutes of his father David, except he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. 4 (C)The king went to (D)Gibeon to sacrifice there, (E)for that was the great high place; Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 (F)In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon (G)in a dream at night; and God said, “(H)Ask what you wish Me to give you.”
Solomon’s Prayer
6 Then Solomon said, “(I)You have shown great lovingkindness to Your servant David my father, (J)according as he walked before You in [a]truth and righteousness and uprightness of heart toward You; and (K)You have [b]reserved for him this great lovingkindness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 Now, O Lord my God, (L)You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet (M)I am but a little child; (N)I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 (O)Your servant is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, (P)a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9 So (Q)give Your servant [c]an understanding heart to judge Your people (R)to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this [d]great people of Yours?”
God’s Answer
10 [e]It was pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing and have (S)not asked for yourself [f]long life, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself [g]discernment to understand justice, 12 behold, (T)I have done according to your words. Behold, (U)I have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor shall one like you arise after you. 13 (V)I have also given you what you have not asked, both (W)riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days. 14 (X)If you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will (Y)prolong your days.”
The Lord Praised for His Goodness.
111 [a]Praise [b]the Lord!
I (A)will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the (B)company of the upright and in the assembly.
2 (C)Great are the works of the Lord;
They are [c](D)studied by all who delight in them.
3 [d](E)Splendid and majestic is His work,
And (F)His righteousness endures forever.
4 He has made His [e]wonders [f]to be remembered;
The Lord is (G)gracious and compassionate.
5 He has (H)given [g]food to those who [h]fear Him;
He will (I)remember His covenant forever.
6 He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the heritage of the nations.
7 The works of His hands are [i](J)truth and justice;
All His precepts (K)are [j]sure.
8 They are (L)upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in [k](M)truth and uprightness.
9 He has sent (N)redemption to His people;
He has [l]ordained His covenant forever;
(O)Holy and [m]awesome is His name.
10 The [n](P)fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A (Q)good understanding have all those who [o]do His commandments;
His (R)praise endures forever.
15 Therefore [a]be careful how you (A)walk, not (B)as unwise men but as wise, 16 [b](C)making the most of your time, because (D)the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but (E)understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And (F)do not get drunk with wine, [c]for that is (G)dissipation, but be (H)filled with the Spirit, 19 (I)speaking to [d]one another in (J)psalms and (K)hymns and spiritual (L)songs, (M)singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 (N)always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to [e](O)God, even the Father;
51 (A)I am the living bread that (B)came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, (C)he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give (D)for the life of the world is (E)My flesh.”
52 (F)Then the Jews (G)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (H)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (I)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (J)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the (K)living Father (L)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which (M)came down out of heaven; not as (N)the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread (O)will live forever.”
