15 “Yahweh your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your midst, from your countrymen,[a] and to him you shall listen. 16 This is according to all that you asked[b] from Yahweh your God at Horeb, on the day of the assembly, saying,[c] ‘I do not want again to hear[d] the voice of Yahweh my God, and I do not want to see again this great fire, so that I may not die!’ 17 And Yahweh said to me, ‘They are right in what they have said. 18 I will raise up a prophet for them from among their countrymen[e] like you, and I will place[f] my words into his mouth, and he shall speak to them everything that I command him.[g] 19 And then[h] the man that will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I will hold accountable. 20 However, the prophet that behaves presumptuously by speaking a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, and who speaks in the name of other gods, then that prophet shall die.’
Praise to God for His Work and Commands
111 Praise Yah![a]
I will give thanks to Yahweh with all my heart,
in the assembly of the upright and the congregation.
2 The works of Yahweh are great,
studied[b] by all who delight in them.
3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has made his wonders to be remembered;[c]
Yahweh is gracious and compassionate.
5 He gives food to those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
6 He has declared the power of his works for his people,
by giving to them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice;
all his precepts are reliable.
8 They are sustained forever and ever,
done with faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He has sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever;
holy and fearful is his name.
10 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom;
all who do them[d] have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever.
Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols
8 Now concerning food sacrificed to idols, we know that “we all have knowledge.”[a] Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2 If anyone thinks he knows anything, he has not yet known as it is necessary to know. 3 But if anyone loves God, this one is known by him.
4 Therefore, concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that “an idol is nothing in the world” and that “there is no God except one.”[b] 5 For even if after all there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, just as there are many gods and many lords,
6 yet to us there is one God, the Father,
from whom are all things, and we are for him,
and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom are all things, and we are through him.
7 But this knowledge is not in everyone. But some, being accustomed until now to the idol, eat this food as food sacrificed to idols, and their conscience, because it[c] is weak, is defiled. 8 But food does not bring us close to God. For neither if we eat do we have more, nor if we do not eat do we lack.[d] 9 But watch out lest somehow this right of yours becomes a cause for stumbling to the weak. 10 For if someone should see you who has knowledge reclining for a meal in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, because it[e] is weak, be strengthened so that he eats the food sacrificed to idols? 11 For the one who is weak—the brother for whom Christ died—is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 Now if you[f] sin in this way against the brothers and wound their conscience, which is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat forever[g], in order that I may not cause my brother to sin.
21 And they went into Capernaum and immediately on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue.[a]
A Man with an Unclean Spirit Healed
22 And they were amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like the scribes. 23 And so then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, 24 saying, “Leave us alone,[b] Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And after[c] convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they began to discuss with one another, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him.” 28 And the report about him then went out everywhere in the whole surrounding region of Galilee.
