Psalm 110

Yahweh Gives Authority to His Messiah

Of David. A psalm.[a]

110 A declaration of Yahweh to my lord,
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Yahweh will send out your mighty scepter from Zion;
rule in the midst of your enemies.
Your people will volunteer[b] in the day of your power.[c]
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
you will have the dew of your youth.[d]
Yahweh has sworn and he will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
according to the manner of Melchizedek.”
O Lord, at your right hand
he will shatter kings in the day of his anger.
He will judge among the nations;
he will fill them with corpses.
He will shatter the rulers[e] of many countries.
He will drink from the stream by the road;
therefore he will lift up his head.

Proverbs 3:1-12

Wisdom and Piety

My child, do not forget my instruction,
    and may your heart guard my commands.
For length of days, years of life,
    and peace they[a] shall add to you.
May loyal love[b] and truth not forsake you;
    bind them around your neck,
    write them upon your heart.
And you shall find favor and good sense[c]
    in the eyes of God and humankind.
Trust Yahweh[d] with all your heart;
    do not lean toward your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will straighten your paths.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
    fear Yahweh and retreat from evil.
There shall be healing for your flesh,[e]
    and refreshment for your body.
Honor Yahweh from your substance,[f]
    and from the firstfruits of all that will come to you,
10 and your barns shall be full of plenty,
    and your vats shall burst with new wine.

Happy Is the One Who Finds Wisdom

11 Do not despise the discipline of Yahweh, my child.
    Do not be weary of his reproof
12 because whomever Yahweh will love, he will rebuke,
    as a father delights in his son.

James 4:11-17

11 Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. The one who speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of the law.[a] 12 There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your[b] neighbor?

Arrogant Boasting About the Future

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there, and carry on business and make a profit,” 14 you who do not know what will happen tomorrow[c], what your life will be like[d]. For you are a smoky vapor that appears for a short time and then disappears. 15 Instead you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to the one who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
