Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 121[a]
A song of ascents.[b]
121 I look up[c] toward the hills.
From where[d] does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,[e]
the Creator[f] of heaven and earth.
3 May he not allow your foot to slip.
May your Protector[g] not sleep.[h]
4 Look! Israel’s Protector[i]
does not sleep or slumber.
5 The Lord is your protector;
the Lord is the shade at your right hand.
6 The sun will not harm you by day,
or the moon by night.[j]
7 The Lord will protect you from all harm;
he will protect your life.
8 The Lord will protect you in all you do,[k]
now and forevermore.
The Deliverance from Egypt
29 [a] It happened[b] at midnight—the Lord attacked all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the prison, and all the firstborn of the cattle. 30 Pharaoh got up[c] in the night,[d] along with all his servants and all Egypt, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no house[e] in which there was not someone dead. 31 Pharaoh[f] summoned Moses and Aaron in the night and said, “Get up, get out[g] from among my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, serve the Lord as you have requested![h] 32 Also, take your flocks and your herds, just as you have requested, and leave. But bless me also.”[i]
33 The Egyptians were urging[j] the people on, in order to send them out of the land quickly,[k] for they were saying, “We are all dead!” 34 So the people took their dough before the yeast was added,[l] with their kneading troughs bound up in their clothing on their shoulders. 35 Now the Israelites had done[m] as Moses told them—they had requested from the Egyptians[n] silver and gold items and clothing. 36 The Lord[o] gave the people favor[p] in the sight of the Egyptians, and they gave them whatever they wanted,[q] and so they plundered Egypt.[r]
37 The Israelites journeyed[s] from Rameses[t] to Sukkoth. There were about 600,000 men[u] on foot, plus their dependents.[v] 38 A mixed multitude[w] also went up with them, and flocks and herds—a very large number of cattle.[x] 39 They baked cakes of bread without yeast using the dough they had brought from Egypt, for it was made without yeast. Because they were thrust out[y] of Egypt and were not able to delay, they[z] could not prepare[aa] food for themselves either.
40 Now the length of time the Israelites lived in Egypt was 430 years.[ab] 41 At the end of the 430 years, on the very day, all the regiments[ac] of the Lord went out of the land of Egypt. 42 It was a night of vigil for the Lord to bring them out from the land of Egypt,[ad] and so[ae] on this night all Israel is to keep the vigil[af] to the Lord for generations to come.
Submission to Civil Government
13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except by God’s appointment,[a] and the authorities that exist have been instituted by God. 2 So the person who resists such authority[b] resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will incur judgment 3 (for rulers cause no fear for good conduct but for bad). Do you desire not to fear authority? Do good and you will receive its commendation 4 because it is God’s servant for your well-being. But be afraid if you do wrong because government[c] does not bear the sword for nothing. It is God’s servant to administer punishment on the person who does wrong. 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of the wrath of the authorities[d] but also because of your conscience.[e] 6 For this reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities[f] are God’s servants devoted to governing.[g] 7 Pay everyone what is owed: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.
