Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed.
2 Why are (A)the [a]nations in an uproar
And the peoples (B)devising a vain thing?
2 The (C)kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
(D)Against the Lord and against His [b](E)Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us (F)tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”
4 He who [c]sits in the heavens (G)laughs,
The Lord (H)scoffs at them.
5 Then He will speak to them in His (I)anger
And (J)terrify them in His fury, saying,
6 “But as for Me, I have [d]installed (K)My King
Upon Zion, (L)My holy mountain.”
7 “I will surely tell of the [e]decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are (M)My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 ‘Ask of Me, and (N)I will surely give (O)the [f]nations as Your inheritance,
And the very (P)ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 ‘You shall [g](Q)break them with a [h]rod of iron,
You shall (R)shatter them like [i]earthenware.’”
10 Now therefore, O kings, (S)show discernment;
Take warning, O [j]judges of the earth.
11 [k]Worship the Lord with [l](T)reverence
And rejoice with (U)trembling.
12 [m]Do homage to (V)the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For (W)His wrath may [n]soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who (X)take refuge in Him!
9 The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in (A)a thick cloud, so that the (B)people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.
10 The Lord also said to Moses, “Go to the people and (C)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them (D)wash their garments; 11 and let them be ready for the third day, for on (E)the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘[a]Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; (F)whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but (G)he shall surely be stoned or [b]shot through; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to (H)the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. 15 He said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”
16 (I)So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were [c]thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the [d]foot of the mountain.
The Lord Visits Sinai
18 (J)Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it (K)in fire; and its smoke ascended like (L)the smoke of a furnace, and (M)the whole mountain [e]quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and (N)God answered him with [f]thunder. 20 (O)The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Go down, [g]warn the people, so that (P)they do not break through to the Lord to gaze, and many of them [h]perish. 22 Also let the (Q)priests who come near to the Lord consecrate themselves, or else the Lord will break out against them.” 23 Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You [i]warned us, saying, ‘(R)Set bounds about the mountain and consecrate it.’” 24 Then the Lord said to him, “[j]Go down and come up again, (S)you and Aaron with you; but do not let the (T)priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, or He will break forth upon them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.
23 By faith (A)Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the (B)king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, (C)when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to (D)endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 (E)considering the reproach of [a]Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the (F)reward. 27 By faith he (G)left Egypt, not (H)fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as (I)seeing Him who is unseen. 28 By faith he [b](J)kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that (K)he who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.
