Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
11 1 Christ born of the root of Jesse. 2 His virtues and kingdom. 6 The fruits of the Gospel. 10 The calling of the Gentiles.
1 But there shall come a [a]rod forth of the stock of Jesse, and a grass shall grow out of his roots.
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord,
3 And shall make him prudent in the fear of the Lord: for he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove by the hearing of his ears.
4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and with equity shall he reprove for the meek of the earth: and he shall [b]smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
5 And justice shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
6 The [c]wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie with the kid, and the calf, and the lion, and the fat beast together, and a little child shall lead them.
7 And the cow and the bear shall feed: their young ones shall lie together: and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock.
8 And the sucking child shall play upon the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand upon the cockatrice hole.
9 Then shall none hurt nor destroy in all the mountain of mine holiness: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as [d]the waters that cover the sea.
10 And in that day the root of Jesse, which shall stand up for a sign unto the [e]people, the nations shall seek unto it, and his [f]rest shall be glorious.
72 1 He prayeth for the prosperous estate of the kingdom of Solomon, who was the figure of Christ, 4 under whom shall be righteousness, peace, and felicity. 10 Unto whom all Kings and nations shall do homage, 17 Whose name and power shall endure forever, and in whom all nations shall be blessed.
A Psalm [a]of Solomon.
1 Give thy [b]judgments to the King, O God, and thy righteousness to the King’s [c]son.
2 Then shall he judge thy people in righteousness, and thy poor with equity.
3 The [d]mountains, and the hills shall bring peace to the people by justice.
4 He shall [e]judge the poor of the people: he shall save the children of the needy, and shall subdue the oppressor.
5 They shall [f]fear thee as long as the sun and moon endureth, from generation to generation.
6 He shall come [g]down like the rain upon the mown grass, and as the showers that water the earth.
7 In his days shall the righteous flourish, and abundance of peace shall be so long as the moon endureth.
18 Blessed be the Lord God, even the God of Israel which only doeth [a]wondrous things.
19 And blessed be his glorious Name forever: and let all the earth be filled with his glory. So be it, even so be it.
4 [a]For whatsoever things are written [b]aforetime, are written for our learning, that we through patience, and comfort of the [c]Scriptures might have hope.
5 [d]Now the God of patience and consolation give you that ye be (A)like-minded one towards another, according to Christ Jesus,
6 That ye with one mind, and with one mouth may praise God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also [e]received us to the glory of God.
8 [f]Now I say, that Jesus Christ was a minister of the [g]circumcision, for the [h]truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers.
9 [i]And let the Gentiles praise God, for his mercy, as it is written, (B)For this cause I will [j]confess thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy Name.
10 And again he saith, (C)Rejoice, ye Gentiles with his people.
11 And again, (D)Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud ye him all people together.
12 And again Isaiah saith, (E)There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, in him shall the Gentiles trust.
13 [k]Now the God of [l]hope fill you with [m]all joy, and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the holy Ghost.
3 1 John preacheth. 4 His apparel and meat. 5 He baptizeth. 8 The fruits of repentance. 10 The axe at the root of the trees. 12 The fan and the chaff. 13 Christ is baptized.
1 And (A)in [a]those days, [b]John the Baptist came and preached in the [c]wilderness of Judea,
2 And said, [d]Repent: for the [e]kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 For this is he of whom it is spoken by the Prophet Isaiah, saying, (B)The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: [f]make his paths straight.
4 (C)And this John had his garment of camel’s hair, and a girdle of a skin about his loins, his meat was also [g]locusts and wild honey.
5 (D)Then went out to him [h]Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6 And they were baptized of him in Jordan, [i]confessing their sins.
7 [j]Now when he saw many of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, (E)O generation of vipers, who hath forewarned you to flee from the anger to come?
8 [k]Bring forth therefore fruit worthy amendment of life,
9 [l]And [m]think not to say [n]with yourselves, (F)We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able even of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also is the axe put to the root of the trees: (G)therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 (H)[o]Indeed I baptize you with water to [p]amendment of life, but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear, he will baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire.
12 [q]Which hath his fan in his hand, and will [r]make clean his floor, and gather his wheat into his garner, but will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
