Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
צ Tsade
137 You are righteous, Lord,(A)
and your judgments are just.
138 The decrees you issue are righteous
and altogether trustworthy.(B)
139 My anger overwhelms me
because my foes forget your words.(C)
140 Your word is completely pure,(D)
and your servant loves it.(E)
141 I am insignificant and despised,(F)
but I do not forget your precepts.(G)
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
and your instruction is true.(H)
143 Trouble and distress have overtaken me,
but your commands are my delight.(I)
144 Your decrees are righteous forever.(J)
Give me understanding, and I will live.
5 Moreover, wine[a] betrays;
an arrogant man is never at rest.[b]
He enlarges his appetite like Sheol,
and like Death he is never satisfied.(A)
He gathers all the nations to himself;(B)
he collects all the peoples for himself.
The Five Woe Oracles
6 Won’t all of these take up a taunt against him,(C)
with mockery and riddles about him?
They will say,
“Woe to him who amasses what is not his—
how much longer?(D)—
and loads himself with goods taken in pledge.”(E)
7 Won’t your creditors suddenly arise,
and those who disturb you wake up?
Then you will become spoil for them.(F)
8 Since you have plundered many nations,(G)
all the peoples who remain will plunder you(H)—
because of human bloodshed
and violence(I) against lands, cities,
and all who live in them.(J)
9 Woe to him who dishonestly makes
wealth for his house[c](K)
to place his nest on high,
to escape the grasp of disaster!(L)
10 You have planned shame for your house
by wiping out many peoples
and sinning against your own self.
11 For the stones will cry out(M) from the wall,
and the rafters will answer them
from the woodwork.
39 “Our father is Abraham,” they replied.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them, “you would do what Abraham did.(A) 40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth(B) that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You’re doing what your father does.”(C)
“We weren’t born(D) of sexual immorality,”(E) they said. “We have one Father—God.”(F)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(G) because I came from God(H) and I am here. For I didn’t come on my own, but he sent me. 43 Why don’t you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to[a] my word.(I) 44 You are of your father the devil,(J) and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer(K) from the beginning(L) and does not stand in the truth,(M) because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature,[b] because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Who among you can convict me of sin?(N) If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 The one who is from God listens to God’s words. This is why you don’t listen, because you are not from God.”
