Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
ז Zayin
49 Remember your word to your servant;
you have given me hope through it.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction:(A)
Your promise has given me life.
51 The arrogant constantly ridicule me,
but I do not turn away from your instruction.(B)
52 Lord, I remember your judgments from long ago
and find comfort.
53 Fury seizes me(C) because of the wicked
who reject your instruction.(D)
54 Your statutes are the theme of my song
during my earthly life.[a]
55 Lord, I remember your name(E) in the night,(F)
and I obey your instruction.
56 This is my practice:
I obey your precepts.(G)
36 “Now therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to this city about which you said, ‘It has been handed over to Babylon’s king through sword, famine, and plague’: 37 I will certainly gather them from all the lands where I have banished them in my anger, fury, and intense wrath, and I will return them to this place and make them live in safety.(A) 38 They will be my people, and I will be their God.(B) 39 I will give them integrity of heart(C) and action[a] so that they will fear me always, for their good and for the good of their descendants after them.
40 “I will make a permanent covenant with them:(D) I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put fear of me in their hearts so they will never again turn away from me.(E) 41 I will take delight in them to do what is good for them, and with all my heart and mind I will faithfully plant them in this land.(F)
42 “For this is what the Lord says: Just as I have brought all this terrible disaster on these people,(G) so am I about to bring on them all the good I am promising them. 43 Fields will be bought in this land about which you are saying,(H) ‘It’s a desolation(I) without people or animals; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans!’ 44 Fields will be purchased, the transaction written on a scroll and sealed,(J) and witnesses will be called on in the land of Benjamin,(K) in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, and in Judah’s cities—the cities of the hill country, the cities of the Judean foothills, and the cities of the Negev—because I will restore their fortunes.”[b]
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Warning to the Rich
5 Come now, you rich(A) people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted and your clothes are moth-eaten.(B) 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in the last days.(C) 4 Look! The pay that you withheld from the workers(D) who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Armies.(E) 5 You have lived luxuriously on the earth and have indulged yourselves. You have fattened your hearts(F) in a day of slaughter.(G) 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous, who does not resist you.(H)
