Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 87[a]
Written by the Korahites; a psalm, a song.
87 The Lord’s city is in the holy hills.[b]
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 People say wonderful things about you,[c]
O city of God. (Selah)
4 I mention Rahab[d] and Babylon to my followers.[e]
Here are[f] Philistia and Tyre, along with Ethiopia.[g]
It is said of them, “This one was born there.”[h]
5 But it is said of Zion’s residents,[i]
“Each one of these[j] was born in her,
and the Most High[k] makes her secure.”
6 The Lord writes in the census book of the nations,[l]
“This one was born there.”[m] (Selah)
7 As for the singers, as well as the pipers—
all of them sing within your walls.[n]
The Lord’s Presence in Zion
17 “You will be convinced[a] that I the Lord am your God,
dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain.
Jerusalem will be holy—
conquering armies[b] will no longer pass through it.
18 “On that day[c] the mountains will drip with sweet wine,[d]
and the hills will flow with milk.[e]
All the dry stream beds[f] of Judah will flow with water.
A spring will flow out from the temple[g] of the Lord,
watering the Valley of Acacia Trees.[h]
19 Egypt will be desolate
and Edom will be a desolate wilderness,
because of the violence they did to the people of Judah,[i]
in whose land they shed innocent blood.
20 But Judah will reside securely forever,
and Jerusalem will be secure[j] from one generation to the next.
The Parable of the Two Sons
28 “What[a] do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 The boy answered,[b] ‘I will not.’ But later he had a change of heart[c] and went. 30 The father[d] went to the other son and said the same thing. This boy answered,[e] ‘I will, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said, “The first.”[f] Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth,[g] tax collectors[h] and prostitutes will go ahead of you into the kingdom of God! 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe. Although[i] you saw this, you did not later change your minds[j] and believe him.
