Psalm 36:5-10

Praise to the Lord

Your gracious love, Lord, reaches to the heavens;
    your truth[a] extends to the skies.[b]
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    your justice is like the great depths of the sea.[c]
        You deliver both[d] people and animals, Lord.
How precious is your gracious love, God!
    The children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They are refreshed from the abundance of your house;
    You cause them to drink from the river of your pleasures.
For with you is a fountain of life,
    and in your light we will see light.

10 Send forth your gracious love to those who know you,
    and your righteousness to those who are upright in heart.

Jeremiah 3:19-25

God’s Desire for His People

19 “I said,

‘How I wanted to treat you like children,
    and give you a pleasant land,
        the most beautiful inheritance of the nations.’
I said, ‘You will call me, my father,
    and won’t turn back from following me.’
20 Instead, like an unfaithful wife leaves her husband,
    so you have been unfaithful to me, house of Israel,”
        declares the Lord.

Israel Cries for Help

21 “A voice is heard on the barren heights,
    the weeping and pleading of the children of Israel
because they have perverted their way.
    They have forgotten the Lord their God.”

God Calls for Repentance

22 “Turn back, unfaithful people,[a]
    and I’ll heal your unfaithfulness.”

Israel Replies

“Look, we’re coming to you
    because you are the Lord our God.
23 Truly the hills are a deception,[b]
    and the mountains[c] are confusion.
        Truly, in the Lord our God is Israel’s salvation.”
24 Since our youth the false gods have consumed
    the products of our ancestors’ hard work,
their sheep and their cattle,
    their sons and their daughters.
25 “Let us lie down in our shame,
    and let our humiliation cover us,
because both we and our ancestors have sinned
    against the Lord our God from our youth
        until this present time.
We haven’t obeyed the Lord our God.”

1 Corinthians 7:1-7

Concerning Marriage

Now about what you asked: “Is it advisable for a man not to touch a woman inappropriately?”[a] Yes, and yet[b] because sexual immorality is so rampant,[c] every man should have his own wife, and every woman should have her own husband.

A husband should fulfill his obligation to his wife, and a wife should do the same for her husband. A wife does not have authority over her own body, but her husband does. In the same way, a husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but his wife does. Do not withhold yourselves from each other unless you agree to do so just for a set time, in order to devote yourselves to prayer.[d] Then you should come together again so that Satan does not tempt you through your lack of self-control. But I say this as a concession, not as a command. I would like everyone to be unmarried,[e] like I am. However, each person has a special gift from God, one this and another that.
