Zion’s Future Splendor

60 “Arise! Shine! For your light arrives!
The splendor[a] of the Lord shines on you!
For, look, darkness covers the earth
and deep darkness covers[b] the nations,
but the Lord shines on you;
his splendor[c] appears over you.
Nations come to your light,
kings to your bright light.
Look all around you![d]
They all gather and come to you—
your sons come from far away,
and your daughters are escorted by guardians.
Then you will look and smile,[e]
you will be excited and your heart will swell with pride.[f]
For the riches of distant lands[g] will belong to you,
and the wealth of nations will come to you.
Camel caravans will cover your roads,[h]
young camels from Midian and Ephah.
All the merchants of Sheba[i] will come,
bringing gold and incense
and singing praises to the Lord.[j]

Psalm 72:1-7

Psalm 72[a]

For[b] Solomon.

72 O God, grant the king the ability to make just decisions.[c]
Grant the king’s son[d] the ability to make fair decisions.[e]
Then he will judge[f] your people fairly,
and your oppressed ones[g] equitably.
The mountains will bring news of peace to the people,
and the hills will announce justice.[h]
He will defend[i] the oppressed among the people;
he will deliver[j] the children[k] of the poor
and crush the oppressor.
People will fear[l] you[m] as long as the sun and moon remain in the sky,
for generation after generation.[n]
He[o] will descend like rain on the mown grass,[p]
like showers that drench[q] the earth.[r]
During his days the godly will flourish;[s]
peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky.[t]

Psalm 72:10-14

10 The kings of Tarshish[a] and the coastlands will offer gifts;
the kings of Sheba[b] and Seba[c] will bring tribute.
11 All kings will bow down to him;
all nations will serve him.
12 For he will rescue the needy[d] when they cry out for help,
and the oppressed[e] who have no defender.
13 He will take pity[f] on the poor and needy;
the lives of the needy he will save.
14 From harm and violence he will defend them;[g]
he will value their lives.[h]

Ephesians 3:1-12

Paul’s Relationship to the Divine Mystery

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus[a] for the sake of you Gentiles if indeed[b] you have heard of the stewardship[c] of God’s grace that was given to me for you, that[d] by revelation the mystery[e] was made known to me, as I wrote before briefly.[f] When reading this,[g] you will be able to[h] understand my insight into the mystery[i] of Christ (which[j] was not disclosed to people[k] in former[l] generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by[m] the Spirit), namely, that through the gospel[n] the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members[o] of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus. I became a servant of this gospel[p] according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by[q] the exercise of his power.[r] To me—less than the least of all the saints[s]—this grace was given,[t] to proclaim to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ and to enlighten[u] everyone about God’s secret plan[v]—the mystery that has been hidden for ages[w] in God[x] who has created all things. 10 The purpose of this enlightenment is that[y] through the church the multifaceted wisdom[z] of God should now be disclosed to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly realms. 11 This was according to[aa] the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and confident access[ab] to God[ac] by way of Christ’s[ad] faithfulness.[ae]

Matthew 2:1-12

The Visit of the Wise Men

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, in the time[a] of King Herod,[b] wise men[c] from the East came to Jerusalem saying, “Where is the one who is born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[d] and have come to worship him.” When King Herod[e] heard this he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem[f] with him. After assembling all the chief priests and experts in the law,[g] he asked them where the Christ[h] was to be born. “In Bethlehem of Judea,” they said, “for it is written this way by the prophet:

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are in no way least among the rulers of Judah,
for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”[i]

Then Herod[j] privately summoned the wise men and determined from them when the star had appeared. He[k] sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and look carefully for the child. When you find him, inform me so that I can go and worship him as well.” After listening to the king they left, and once again[l] the star they saw when it rose[m] led them until it stopped above the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star they shouted joyfully.[n] 11 As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down[o] and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense,[p] and myrrh.[q] 12 After being warned in a dream not to return to Herod,[r] they went back by another route to their own country.
