Psalm 25[a]

Prayer for Guidance and Help

[b]Of David.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul;
    in you, O my God, I trust.
Do not let me be put to shame,
    or permit my enemies to gloat over me.
No one who places his hope in you
    will ever be put to shame,
but shame will be the lot of all
    who break faith without justification.
[c]Make your ways known to me, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and instruct me,
    for you are God, my Savior,
    and in you I hope all the day long.
Be mindful, O Lord, that mercy and kindness
    have been yours from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth
    or my many transgressions,
but remember me in your kindness,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord.
[d]Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore, he instructs sinners in his ways.
He guides the humble in what is right
    and teaches them the path to follow.
10 The ways of the Lord[e] are kindness and truth
    for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

Nehemiah 9:16-25

16 “However, they and our ancestors acted with arrogance;
    they stubbornly refused to obey your commandments.
17 They refused to obey you
    and no longer recalled the miracles
    you had wrought among them.
In their obstinacy they became stiff-necked
    and came to a decision
    to return to their slavery in Egypt.
But because you are a forgiving God,
    gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger and rich in mercy,
    you did not forsake them.
18 “Even when they had cast for themselves
    a calf out of molten metal
and proclaimed: ‘Here is your God
who brought you up from Egypt,’
and were guilty of gross blasphemies,
19 you in your great compassion
    did not abandon them in the wilderness.
The pillar of cloud never failed
    to lead them on their journey by night,
nor did the pillar of fire fail by night
    to light the way ahead of them
    by which they were to go.
20 “You bestowed your good spirit on them
    to give them understanding.
Your manna you did not withhold from their mouths,
    and you gave them water in their thirst.
21 For forty years you sustained them;
    they lacked nothing in the wilderness.
Their clothes did not become worn,
    and their feet did not become swollen.
22 “You gave them kingdoms and peoples,
    allotting to them even the most remote frontiers.
They took possession of the land of King Sihon of Heshbon
    and the land of King Og of Bashan.
23 You made their children as numerous
    as the stars of the heavens,
and you brought them into the land
    which you had commanded their fathers to enter and possess.
24 “The sons entered and took possession of the land,
and you subdued the Canaanite inhabitants
    and delivered them into your power,
their kings as well as the peoples of the land,
    to deal with them as they pleased.
25 They captured fortified towns and fertile land;
    they took possession of houses
    filled with all kinds of good things,
cisterns already dug, vineyards,
    olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance.
They ate and had their fill, grew fat,
    and found delight in your great goodness.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-22

Building Up the Community[a]

12 Show Respect for Leaders.[b]Brethren, we beg you to respect those whose duty it is to labor among you as your leaders in the Lord and to admonish you. 13 Show the highest esteem for them in love because of their work. Be at peace with one another.

14 [c]We also exhort you, brethren, to admonish those who are idle, encourage those who are afraid, support those who are weak, and be patient with everybody. 15 Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil. Rather, always aim to achieve what is best for each other and for everyone.

16 [d]Rejoice always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

19 Do Not Extinguish the Spirit.[e] Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies.[f] 21 Test everything, and hold fast to what is good. 22 Avoid every form of evil.
