Psalm 115

Psalm 115[a]

Hymn to the Lord, the One God

[b]Not to us,[c]Lord, not to us,
    but to your name give glory
    because of your kindness and faithfulness.
Why should the nations ask,
    “Where is their God?”[d]
Our God is in heaven;
    he does whatever he pleases.[e]
Their idols are merely silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.[f]
They have mouths but they cannot speak;
    they have eyes but they cannot see.
They have ears but they cannot hear;
    they have noses but they cannot smell.
They have hands but they cannot feel;
    they have feet but they cannot walk;
    their throats can emit no sound.
Those who make them end up like them,
    as do all who place their trust in them.
[g]The house of Israel trusts in the Lord;
    he is their help and their shield.
10 The house of Aaron trusts in the Lord;
    he is their help and their shield.
11 Those who fear the Lord trust in the Lord;
    he is their help and their shield.
12 [h]The Lord will be mindful of us and bless us;
    he will bless the house of Israel;
    he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless those who fear the Lord,
    the small no less than the great.[i]
14 [j]May the Lord cause you to increase,
    both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.
16 [k]The heavens belong to the Lord,
    but he has given the earth to humanity.
17 It is not the dead who praise the Lord,
    those who sink into silence.[l]
18 It is we who bless the Lord
    from this time forward and forevermore.[m]
Alleluia.

Exodus 28:29-38

29 “Thus Aaron shall carry the names of the children of Israel over his heart on the breastplate of judgment whenever he enters the sanctuary. This will serve as a memorial before the Lord forever. 30 Put the Urim and the Thummim inside the breastplate of judgment so that they will be over Aaron’s heart whenever he enters into the presence of the Lord.[a] Aaron will forever bear the judgment of the children of Israel over his heart whenever he enters into the presence of the Lord.

31 Other Priestly Vestments.“Make the robe for the ephod all in blue 32 with an opening in the middle for the head, with a woven border around the opening, like the opening of a garment, so that it may not be torn. 33 On its hem you shall design pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet cloth, and fine twisted linen, all around its hem, with bells of gold between them 34 so that there shall be a golden bell[b] and a pomegranate alternating all around the hem of the robe. 35 Aaron must wear it when he ministers as priest, and one will hear the sound it makes when he enters the sanctuary, into the presence of the Lord, and when he leaves it, lest he die.

36 “You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave ‘Holy to the Lord’ on it as one engraves a signet ring. 37 Attach it with a blue cord to the front part of the turban. 38 It will be on Aaron’s forehead, so that Aaron may carry the weight of whatever guilt the children of Israel may incur in the holy things, when they consecrate their holy offerings. He will always wear it on his forehead so that they may be pleasing to the Lord.

Philippians 1:3-11

Joyful Prayer for the Philippians.[a] I give thanks to my God every time I think of you. I always pray for you, interceding for you with joy because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this: that the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion on the day of Christ Jesus.[b]

It is only right for me to feel this way toward you, because I hold you in my heart, for you have all shared with me in God’s grace, both during my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. Indeed, God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

And for this I pray: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and full insight 10 to enable you to discover what is really important, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11 filled with the fruits of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.
