Genesis 9:8-17

Then God said to Noah and his sons, “·Now [or Look] I am making my ·agreement [covenant; treaty; 6:18] with you and your ·people [seed] ·who will live after you [L after you], 10 and with every living thing that is with you—the birds, the ·tame [livestock; cattle] and the wild animals, and with everything that came out of the ·boat [ark] with you—with every living thing on earth. 11 I ·make [establish] this ·agreement [covenant; treaty; 6:18] with you: ·I will never again destroy all living things by a flood [L a flood will never again cut off all flesh]. A flood will never again destroy the earth.”

12 And God said, “This is the sign [C a symbol that represents this relationship between God and Noah; 17:11; Ex. 31:13, 17] of the ·agreement [covenant; treaty; 6:18] between me and you and every living creature that is with you for all future generations. 13 I am putting my ·rainbow [bow; C may represent God hanging up his weapon after warring against humanity] in the clouds as the sign of the ·agreement [covenant; treaty; 6:18] between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and a ·rainbow [bow] appears in them, 15 I will remember my ·agreement [covenant; treaty; 6:18] between me and you and every living thing [L of all flesh]. [L The waters of the] Floods will never again destroy all ·life on the earth [L flesh]. 16 When the ·rainbow [bow] appears in the clouds, I will see it and I will remember the ·agreement that continues forever [L eternal covenant] between me and every living thing [L of all flesh] on the earth.”

17 So God said to Noah, “·The rainbow [L This] is a ·sign [9:12] of the ·agreement [covenant; treaty; 6:18] that I made with all living things on earth.”

Psalm 25:1-10

A Prayer for God to Guide

Of David.

25 Lord, I ·give myself [L lift my soul] to you;
    my God, I ·trust [have confidence in] you.
Do not let me be ·disgraced [shamed];
    do not let my enemies ·laugh at [triumph/exult over] me.
No one who ·trusts [hopes in; waits on] you will be ·disgraced [shamed],
    but those who ·sin [betray; are treacherous] without excuse will be ·disgraced [shamed].

Lord, ·tell me [make me know] your ways.
    ·Show [L Teach] me ·how to live [L your paths].
·Guide [Lead] me in your truth,
    and teach me, my God, my ·Savior [Helper; Victor].
    I ·trust [hope in; wait on] you all day long.
Lord, remember your ·mercy [compassion] and ·love [loyalty; covenant love]
    that you have shown since long ago.
Do not remember the sins
    and ·wrong things I did when I was young [transgressions of my youth].
But remember ·to love me [L according to your love/loyalty/covenant love] always
    ·because you are good [on account of your goodness], Lord.

The Lord is good and ·right [upright; virtuous];
    he ·points [instructs] sinners to the right way.
He shows those who are humble how to do right,
    and he teaches them his ways.
10 All the Lord’s ·ways [paths] are ·loving [loyal] and ·true [reliable]
    for those who ·follow [keep; guard] the demands of his ·agreement [covenant].

1 Peter 3:18-22

18 Christ himself suffered for sins ·once [or once for all; C only his suffering has the power to redeem others]. ·He was not guilty, but he suffered for those who are guilty [L …the righteous for the unrighteous] to bring you to God. ·His body was killed [L He was put to death in the flesh/body], but he was made alive in the ·spirit [or Spirit; C at his resurrection in a glorified body]. 19 And in the ·spirit [or Spirit] he went and preached to the spirits in prison [C probably either fallen angels, imprisoned by God (see Gen. 6:1–4; 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6) or the spirits of the people who rejected Noah’s preaching; see v. 20] 20 who refused to obey God long ago in the time of Noah [Gen. 6:1—8:22], when ·God was waiting patiently [L the patience of God waited] while Noah was building the ·boat [ark]. [In this ark; L In it] Only a few people—eight in all—were saved ·by [or through] water. 21 And that water ·is like [anticipates; foreshadows; symbolizes; prefigures] baptism that now saves you—not the ·washing [removal] of dirt from the body, but the ·promise [pledge; appeal; or response] made to God from a ·good [clear] conscience. And this is ·because Jesus Christ was raised from the dead [or through the resurrection of Jesus Christ]. 22 Now Jesus has gone into heaven and is at God’s right side [C the place of honor] ·ruling over angels, authorities, and powers [L with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him].

Mark 1:9-15

Jesus Is Baptized and Tested(A)

·At that time [In those days] Jesus came from the town of Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10 Immediately, as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw ·heaven [the sky] ·open [split open]. The ·Holy Spirit [L Spirit] ·came down [descended] on him like a dove [C either in the form of a dove, or in bird-like descent], 11 and a voice came from heaven: “You are my ·Son, whom I love [dearly beloved Son; Ps. 2:7; Gen. 22:2], ·and I am very pleased with you [in whom I take great delight; Is. 42:1].”

12 ·Then [Immediately] the Spirit ·sent [drove; compelled] Jesus into the ·desert [wilderness]. 13 He was in the ·desert [wilderness] forty days [C analogous to Israel’s forty years] and was ·tempted [or tested] by Satan [C as both Adam and Eve and the nation Israel in the wilderness were tempted, but failed]. He was with the wild animals [C dangerous or perhaps Eden-like conditions], and the angels came and ·took care of [served; ministered to] him.

Jesus Announces the Good News(B)

14 After John was put in prison [C by Herod Antipas; cf. 6:14–29], Jesus went into Galilee, preaching the ·Good News [Gospel] ·from [about] God. 15 He said, “The ·right time has come [L time is fulfilled]. ·The kingdom of God [God’s sovereign rule] is ·near [at hand]. ·Change your hearts and lives [Turn from your sins; Repent] and believe the ·Good News [Gospel]!”
