Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Lord Praised for His Goodness.
111 [a]Praise [b]the Lord!
I (A)will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the (B)company of the upright and in the assembly.
2 (C)Great are the works of the Lord;
They are [c](D)studied by all who delight in them.
3 [d](E)Splendid and majestic is His work,
And (F)His righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused His [e]wonders [f]to be remembered;
The Lord is (G)gracious and compassionate.
5 He has (H)given [g]food to those who [h]fear Him;
He will (I)remember His covenant forever.
6 He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of His hands are [i](J)truth and justice;
All His precepts (K)are trustworthy.
8 They are (L)upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in [j](M)truth and uprightness.
9 He has sent (N)redemption to His people;
He has [k]ordained His covenant forever;
(O)Holy and [l]awesome is His name.
10 The [m](P)fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
All those who [n]follow (Q)His commandments have a good understanding;
His (R)praise endures forever.
23 “I also pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘Lord [a]God, You have begun to show Your servant (A)Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what (B)god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours? 25 Please let me cross over and see the (C)good land that is beyond the Jordan, [b]that good hill country, and Lebanon.’ 26 But (D)the Lord was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me; instead, the Lord said to me, ‘[c]Enough! Do not speak to Me any more about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of (E)Pisgah and raise your eyes to the west, the north, the south, and the east, and see it with your eyes; (F)for you shall not cross over this Jordan. 28 (G)But commission Joshua and encourage him and strengthen him, (H)for he shall go across [d]leading this people, and he will give to them, as an inheritance, the land which you will see.’ 29 So we remained in the valley opposite (I)Beth-peor.
6 But it is not as though (A)the word of God has failed. (B)For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; 7 nor are they all children (C)because they are Abraham’s [a](D)descendants, but: “[b](E)through Isaac your [c]descendants shall be named.” 8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh [d]who are (F)children of God, but the (G)children of the promise are regarded as [e](H)descendants. 9 For this is the word of promise: “(I)At this time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.” 10 (J)And not only that, but there was also (K)Rebekah, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that (L)God’s purpose according to His choice would [f]stand, not [g]because of works but [h]because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “(M)The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written: “(N)Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”
14 (O)What shall we say then? (P)There is no injustice with God, is there? [i](Q)Far from it! 15 For He says to Moses, “(R)I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will show compassion to whomever I show compassion.” 16 So then, it does not depend on the person who [j]wants it nor the one who [k](S)runs, but on (T)God who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “(U)For this very reason I raised you up, in order to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed [l]throughout the earth.” 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He (V)hardens whom He desires.
