Psalm 148

The World Should Praise the Lord

148 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the skies.
Praise him high above the earth.
Praise him, all you angels.
Praise him, all you armies of heaven.
Praise him, sun and moon.
Praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, highest heavens
and you waters above the sky.
Let them praise the Lord,
because they were created by his command.
He put them in place forever and ever;
he made a law that will never change.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
you large sea animals and all the oceans,
lightning and hail, snow and mist,
and stormy winds that obey him,
mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    crawling animals and birds,
11 kings of the earth and all nations,
princes and all rulers of the earth,
12 young men and women,
    old people and children.

13 Praise the Lord,
    because he alone is great.
He is more wonderful than heaven and earth.
14 God has given his people a king.
    He should be praised by all who belong to him;
he should be praised by the Israelites, the people closest to his heart.

Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 49:5-15

The Lord made me in the body of my mother
    to be his servant,
to lead the people of Jacob back to him
so that Israel might be gathered to him.
The Lord will honor me,
and I will get my strength from my God.
Now he told me,
“You are an important servant to me
to bring back the tribes of Jacob,
to bring back the people of Israel who are left alive.
But, more importantly, I will make you a light for all nations
to show people all over the world the way to be saved.”

The Lord who saves you
is the Holy One of Israel.
He speaks to the one who is hated by the people,
    to the servant of rulers.
This is what he says: “Kings will see you and stand to honor you;
great leaders will bow down before you,
because the Lord can be trusted.
He is the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

The Day of Salvation

This is what the Lord says:
“At the right time I will hear your prayers.
On the day of salvation I will help you.
I will protect you,
and you will be the sign of my agreement with the people.
You will bring back the people to the land
and give the land that is now ruined back to its owners.
You will tell the prisoners, ‘Come out of your prison.’
You will tell those in darkness, ‘Come into the light.’
The people will eat beside the roads,
and they will find food even on bare hills.
10 They will not be hungry or thirsty.
Neither the hot sun nor the desert wind will hurt them.
The God who comforts them will lead them
and guide them by springs of water.
11 I will make my mountains into roads,
and the roads will be raised up.
12 Look, people are coming to me from far away,
from the north and from the west,
    from Aswan in southern Egypt.”

13 Heavens and earth, be happy.
    Mountains, shout with joy,
because the Lord comforts his people
and will have pity on those who suffer.

Jerusalem and Her Children

14 But Jerusalem said, “The Lord has left me;
    the Lord has forgotten me.”

15 The Lord answers, “Can a woman forget the baby she nurses?
Can she feel no kindness for the child to which she gave birth?
Even if she could forget her children,
    I will not forget you.

Matthew 12:46-50

Jesus’ True Family

46 While Jesus was talking to the people, his mother and brothers stood outside, trying to find a way to talk to him. 47 Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, and they want to talk to you.”[a]

48 He answered, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 Then he pointed to his followers and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 My true brother and sister and mother are those who do what my Father in heaven wants.”
