Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
13 O Lord, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me.[a]
O God, because of your great loyal love,
answer me with your faithful deliverance.[b]
14 Rescue me from the mud. Don’t let me sink.
Deliver me[c] from those who hate me,
from the deep water.
15 Don’t let the current overpower me.
Don’t let the deep swallow me up.
Don’t let the Pit[d] devour me.[e]
16 Answer me, O Lord, for your loyal love is good.[f]
Because of your great compassion, turn toward me.
30 I will sing praises to God’s name.[a]
I will magnify him as I give him thanks.[b]
31 That will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull
with horns and hooves.
32 The oppressed look on—let them rejoice.
You who seek God,[c] may you be encouraged.[d]
33 For the Lord listens to the needy;
he does not despise his captive people.[e]
34 Let the heavens and the earth praise him,
along with the seas and everything that swims in them.
35 For God will deliver Zion
and rebuild the cities of Judah,
and his people[f] will again live in them and possess Zion.[g]
36 The descendants of his servants will inherit it,
and those who are loyal to him[h] will live in it.[i]
The Beginning of Civilization
17 Cain was intimate with[a] his wife, and she became pregnant[b] and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was building a city, and he named the city after[c] his son Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of[d] Mehujael. Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19 Lamech took two wives for himself; the name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the first[e] of those who live in tents and keep[f] livestock. 21 The name of his brother was Jubal; he was the first of all who play the harp and the flute. 22 Now Zillah also gave birth to Tubal-Cain, who heated metal and shaped[g] all kinds of tools made of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me!
You wives of Lamech, hear my words!
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man[h] for hurting me.
24 If Cain is to be avenged seven times as much,
then Lamech seventy-seven times!”[i]
25 And Adam was intimate with[j] his wife again, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Seth, saying, “God has given[k] me another child[l] in place of Abel because Cain killed him.” 26 And a son was also born to Seth, whom he named Enosh. At that time people[m] began to worship[n] the Lord.
From Adam to Noah
5 This is the record[o] of the family line[p] of Adam.
When God created humankind,[q] he made them[r] in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female; when they were created, he blessed them and named them “humankind.”[s]
3 When[t] Adam had lived 130 years he fathered a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and he named him Seth. 4 The length of time Adam lived[u] after he became the father of Seth was 800 years; during this time he had[v] other[w] sons and daughters. 5 The entire lifetime[x] of Adam was 930 years, and then he died.[y]
The Condemnation of the World
9 What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin, 10 just as it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one,
11 there is no one who understands,
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness, not even one.”[a]
13 “Their throats are open graves,[b]
they deceive with their tongues,
the poison of asps is under their lips.”[c]
14 “Their mouths are[d] full of cursing and bitterness.”[e]
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood,
16 ruin and misery are in their paths,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.”[f]
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[g]
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under[h] the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no one is declared righteous before him[i] by the works of the law,[j] for through the law comes[k] the knowledge of sin. 21 But now[l] apart from the law the righteousness of God (although it is attested by the law and the prophets)[m] has been disclosed— 22 namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ[n] for all who believe. For there is no distinction,
