Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Judgment of the Flood
9 This is the account of Noah.[a]
Noah was a godly man; he was blameless[b] among his contemporaries.[c] He[d] walked with[e] God. 10 Noah had[f] three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 The earth was ruined[g] in the sight of[h] God; the earth was filled with violence.[i] 12 God saw the earth, and indeed[j] it was ruined,[k] for all living creatures[l] on the earth were sinful.[m] 13 So God said[n] to Noah, “I have decided that all living creatures must die,[o] for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Now I am about to destroy[p] them and the earth. 14 Make[q] for yourself an ark of cypress[r] wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover[s] it with pitch inside and out. 15 This is how you should make it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.[t] 16 Make a roof for the ark and finish it, leaving 18 inches[u] from the top.[v] Put a door in the side of the ark, and make lower, middle, and upper decks. 17 I am about to bring[w] floodwaters[x] on the earth to destroy[y] from under the sky all the living creatures that have the breath of life in them.[z] Everything that is on the earth will die, 18 but I will confirm[aa] my covenant with you. You will enter[ab] the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You must bring into the ark two of every kind of living creature from all flesh,[ac] male and female, to keep them alive[ad] with you. 20 Of the birds after their kinds, and of the cattle after their kinds, and of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you so you can keep them alive.[ae] 21 And you must take[af] for yourself every kind of food[ag] that is eaten,[ah] and gather it together.[ai] It will be food for you and for them.”
22 And Noah did all[aj] that God commanded him—he did indeed.[ak]
24 The waters prevailed over[a] the earth for 150 days.
14 And by the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth[a] was dry.
15 Then God spoke to Noah and said, 16 “Come out of the ark, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you all the living creatures that are with you. Bring out[b] every living thing, including the birds, animals, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. Let them increase[c] and be fruitful and multiply on the earth!”[d]
18 Noah went out along with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives. 19 Every living creature, every creeping thing, every bird, and everything that moves on the earth went out of the ark in their groups.
Psalm 46[a]
For the music director, by the Korahites; according to the alamoth style;[b] a song.
46 God is our strong refuge;[c]
he is truly our helper in times of trouble.[d]
2 For this reason we do not fear[e] when the earth shakes,[f]
and the mountains tumble into the depths of the sea,[g]
3 when its waves[h] crash[i] and foam,
and the mountains shake[j] before the surging sea.[k] (Selah)
4 The river’s channels bring joy to the city of God,[l]
the special, holy dwelling place of[m] the Most High.[n]
5 God lives within it,[o] it cannot be moved.[p]
God rescues it[q] at the break of dawn.[r]
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms are overthrown.[s]
God[t] gives a shout,[u] the earth dissolves.[v]
7 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is on our side.[w]
The God of Jacob[x] is our stronghold.[y] (Selah)
8 Come, Witness the exploits[z] of the Lord,
who brings devastation to the earth.[aa]
9 He brings an end to wars throughout the earth.[ab]
He shatters[ac] the bow and breaks[ad] the spear;
he burns[ae] the shields with fire.[af]
10 He says,[ag] “Stop your striving and recognize[ah] that I am God.
I will be exalted[ai] over[aj] the nations! I will be exalted over[ak] the earth!”
11 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is on our side![al]
The God of Jacob[am] is our stronghold![an] (Selah)
The Power of the Gospel
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.[a] 17 For the righteousness[b] of God is revealed in the gospel[c] from faith to faith,[d] just as it is written, “The righteous by faith will live.”[e]
22 namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ[a] for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 24 But they are justified[b] freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. 25 God publicly displayed[c] him[d] at his death[e] as the mercy seat[f] accessible through faith.[g] This was to demonstrate[h] his righteousness, because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed.[i] 26 This was[j] also to demonstrate[k] his righteousness in the present time, so that he would be just[l] and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus’ faithfulness.[m]
27 Where, then, is boasting?[n] It is excluded! By what principle?[o] Of works? No, but by the principle of faith! 28 For we consider that a person[p] is declared righteous by faith apart from the works of the law.[q]
Judgment of Pretenders
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’[a] will enter into the kingdom of heaven—only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 On that day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many powerful deeds in your name?’[b] 23 Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you. Go away from me, you lawbreakers!’[c]
Hearing and Doing
24 “Everyone[d] who hears these words of mine and does them is like[e] a wise man[f] who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the flood[g] came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because its foundation had been laid on rock. 26 Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed—it was utterly destroyed!”[h]
28 When[i] Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed by his teaching, 29 because he taught them like one who had authority,[j] not like their experts in the law.[k]
