Numbers 11:4-6

Complaints about Food

[a] Now the mixed multitude[b] who were among them craved more desirable foods,[c] and so the Israelites wept again[d] and said, “If only we had meat to eat![e] We remember[f] the fish we used to eat[g] freely[h] in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now we[i] are dried up,[j] and there is nothing at all before us[k] except this manna!”

Numbers 11:10-16

Moses’ Complaint to the Lord

10 [a] Moses heard the people weeping[b] throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and when the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly, Moses was also displeased.[c] 11 And Moses said to the Lord, “Why have you afflicted[d] your servant? Why have I not found favor in your sight, that[e] you lay the burden of this entire people on me? 12 Did I conceive this entire people?[f] Did I give birth to[g] them, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your arms, as a foster father[h] bears a nursing child,’ to the land that you swore to their fathers? 13 From where shall I get[i] meat to give to this entire people, for they cry to me, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat!’[j] 14 I am not able to bear this entire people alone,[k] because it[l] is too heavy for me! 15 But if you are going to deal[m] with me like this, then kill me immediately.[n] If I have found favor in your sight then do not let me see my trouble.”[o]

The Response of God

16 [p] The Lord said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know are elders of the people and officials[q] over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting; let them take their position there with you.

Numbers 11:24-29

24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. He then gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and had them stand around the tabernacle. 25 And the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to them, and he took some of the Spirit that was on Moses[a] and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them,[b] they prophesied,[c] but did not do so again.[d]

Eldad and Medad

26 But two men remained in the camp; one’s name was Eldad, and the other’s name was Medad. And the Spirit rested on them. (Now they were among those in the registration,[e] but had not gone to the tabernacle.) So they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a[f] young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!” 28 Joshua son of Nun, the servant[g] of Moses, one of his choice young men,[h] said,[i] “My lord Moses, stop them!”[j] 29 Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for me?[k] I wish that[l] all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!”

Psalm 19:7-14

The law of the Lord is perfect
and preserves one’s life.[a]
The rules set down by the Lord[b] are reliable[c]
and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.[d]
The Lord’s precepts are fair[e]
and make one joyful.[f]
The Lord’s commands[g] are pure[h]
and give insight for life.[i]
The commands to fear the Lord are right[j]
and endure forever.[k]
The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy
and absolutely just.[l]
10 They are of greater value[m] than gold,
than even a great amount of pure gold;
they bring greater delight[n] than honey,
than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb.
11 Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there;[o]
those who obey them receive a rich reward.[p]
12 Who can know all his errors?[q]
Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of.[r]
13 Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins;[s]
do not allow such sins to control me.[t]
Then I will be blameless,
and innocent of blatant[u] rebellion.
14 May my words and my thoughts
be acceptable in your sight,[v]
O Lord, my sheltering rock[w] and my redeemer.[x]

James 5:13-20

Prayer for the Sick

13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you ill? He should summon the elders of the church, and they should pray for him and anoint[a] him with olive oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick and the Lord will raise him up—and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.[b] 16 So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great effectiveness.[c] 17 Elijah was a human being[d] like us, and he prayed earnestly[e] that it would not rain and there was no rain on the land for three years and six months! 18 Then[f] he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land sprouted with a harvest.

19 My brothers and sisters,[g] if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back, 20 he should know that the one who turns a sinner back from his wandering path[h] will save that person’s[i] soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Mark 9:38-50

On Jesus’ Side

38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, because no one who does a miracle in my name will be able soon afterward to say anything bad about me. 40 For whoever is not against us is for us. 41 For I tell you the truth,[a] whoever gives you a cup of water because[b] you bear Christ’s[c] name will never lose his reward.

42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone[d] tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than to have[e] two hands and go into hell,[f] to the unquenchable fire.[g] 45 If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better to enter life lame than to have[h] two feet and be thrown into hell.[i] 47 If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out![j] It is better to enter into the kingdom of God[k] with one eye than to have[l] two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched. 49 Everyone will be salted with fire.[m] 50 Salt[n] is good, but if it loses its saltiness,[o] how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”
