Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 123[a]
A song of ascents.[b]
123 I look up[c] toward you,
the one enthroned[d] in heaven.
2 Look, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female servant look to the hand of her mistress,[e]
so our eyes will look to the Lord, our God, until he shows us favor.
3 Show us favor, O Lord, show us favor!
For we have had our fill of humiliation, and then some.[f]
4 We have had our fill[g]
of the taunts of the self-assured,
of the contempt of the proud.
27 Then the Lord said to me,[a] “When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you. When you call out to them, they will not respond to you. 28 So tell them: ‘This is a nation that has not obeyed the Lord their God and has not accepted correction. Faithfulness is nowhere to be found in it. These people do not even profess it anymore.[b] 29 So mourn,[c] you people of this nation.[d] Cut off your hair and throw it away. Sing a song of mourning on the hilltops. For the Lord has decided to reject[e] and forsake this generation that has provoked his wrath!’”[f]
30 The Lord says, “I have rejected them because[g] the people of Judah have done what I consider evil.[h] They have set up their disgusting idols in the temple[i] that I have claimed for my own[j] and have defiled it. 31 They have also built places of worship[k] in a place called Topheth[l] in the Valley of Ben Hinnom so that they can sacrifice their sons and daughters by fire. That is something I never commanded them to do! Indeed, it never even entered my mind to command such a thing![m] 32 So, watch out!”[n] says the Lord. “The time will soon come when people will no longer call those places Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom. But they will call that valley[o] the Valley of Slaughter, and they will bury so many people in Topheth they will run out of room.[p] 33 Then the dead bodies of these people will be left on the ground for the birds and wild animals to eat.[q] There will not be any survivors to scare them away. 34 I will put an end to the sounds of joy and gladness or the glad celebration of brides and grooms throughout the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem. For the whole land will become a desolate wasteland.”
Challenging Professed Followers
18 Now when Jesus saw a large crowd[a] around him, he gave orders to go to the other side of the lake.[b] 19 Then[c] an expert in the law[d] came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”[e] 20 Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens, and the birds in the sky[f] have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”[g] 21 Another[h] of the[i] disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”[j]
