Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
5 On the next day,[a] their rulers, elders, and experts in the law[b] came together[c] in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest’s family.[d] 7 After[e] making Peter and John[f] stand in their midst, they began to inquire, “By what power or by what name[g] did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,[h] replied,[i] “Rulers of the people and elders,[j] 9 if[k] we are being examined[l] today for a good deed[m] done to a sick man—by what means this man was healed[n]— 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ[o] the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy. 11 This Jesus[p] is the stone that was rejected by you,[q] the builders, that has become the cornerstone.[r] 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people[s] by which we must[t] be saved.”
Psalm 23[a]
A psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd,[b]
I lack nothing.[c]
2 He takes me to lush pastures,[d]
he leads me to refreshing water.[e]
3 He restores my strength.[f]
He leads me down[g] the right paths[h]
for the sake of his reputation.[i]
4 Even when I must walk through the darkest valley,[j]
I fear[k] no danger,[l]
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff reassure me.[m]
5 You prepare a feast before me[n]
in plain sight of my enemies.
You refresh[o] my head with oil;
my cup is completely full.[p]
6 Surely your goodness and faithfulness[q] will pursue[r] me all my days,[s]
and I will live in[t] the Lord’s house[u] for the rest of my life.[v]
16 We have come to know love by this:[a] that Jesus[b] laid down[c] his life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians. 17 But whoever has the world’s possessions[d] and sees his fellow Christian[e] in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God[f] reside[g] in such a person?[h]
18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.[i] 19 And by this[j] we will know that we are of the truth and will convince[k] our conscience[l] in his presence,[m] 20 that[n] if our conscience condemns[o] us, that[p] God is greater than our conscience and knows all things. 21 Dear friends, if our conscience does not condemn us, we have confidence in the presence of God, 22 and[q] whatever we ask we receive from him, because[r] we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing to him. 23 Now[s] this is his commandment:[t] that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he gave[u] us the commandment. 24 And the person who keeps his commandments resides[v] in God,[w] and God[x] in him. Now by this[y] we know that God[z] resides in us: by the Spirit he has given us.
11 “I am the good[a] shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life[b] for the sheep. 12 The hired hand,[c] who is not a shepherd and does not own sheep, sees the wolf coming and abandons[d] the sheep and runs away.[e] So the wolf attacks[f] the sheep and scatters them. 13 Because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep,[g] he runs away.[h]
14 “I am the good shepherd. I[i] know my own[j] and my own know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life[k] for[l] the sheep. 16 I have[m] other sheep that do not come from[n] this sheepfold.[o] I must bring them too, and they will listen to my voice,[p] so that[q] there will be one flock and[r] one shepherd. 17 This is why the Father loves me[s]—because I lay down my life,[t] so that I may take it back again. 18 No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down[u] of my own free will.[v] I have the authority[w] to lay it down, and I have the authority[x] to take it back again. This commandment[y] I received from my Father.”
