Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Creation of the World
1 In the beginning[a] God[b] created[c] the heavens and the earth.[d]
2 Now[e] the earth[f] was without shape and empty,[g] and darkness[h] was over the surface of the watery deep,[i] but the Spirit of God[j] was moving[k] over the surface[l] of the water.[m] 3 God said,[n] “Let there be[o] light.”[p] And there was light! 4 God saw[q] that the light was good,[r] so God separated[s] the light from the darkness. 5 God called[t] the light “day” and the darkness[u] “night.” There was evening, and there was morning, marking the first day.[v]

Disciples of John the Baptist at Ephesus
19 While[a] Apollos was in Corinth, Paul went through the inland[b] regions[c] and came to Ephesus. He[d] found some disciples there[e] 2 and said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”[f] They replied,[g] “No, we have not even[h] heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 So Paul[i] said, “Into what then were you baptized?” “Into John’s baptism,” they replied.[j] 4 Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him,[k] that is, in Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, 6 and when Paul placed[l] his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came[m] upon them, and they began to speak[n] in tongues and to prophesy.[o] 7 (Now there were about twelve men in all.)[p]
4 In the wilderness[a] John the baptizer[b] began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.[c] 5 People[d] from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them[e] in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins. 6 John wore a garment made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.[f] 7 He proclaimed,[g] “One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy[h] to bend down and untie the strap[i] of his sandals. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus
9 Now[j] in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.[k] 10 And just as Jesus[l] was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens[m] splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.[n] 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my one dear Son;[o] in you I take great delight.”[p]
