Psalm 62:5-12

⁵Patiently wait for God alone, my soul!^[a]
For he is the one who gives me hope.^[b]
⁶He alone is my protector^[c] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;^[d] I will not be shaken.
⁷God delivers me and exalts me;
God is my strong protector and my shelter.^[e]
⁸Trust in him at all times, you people!
Pour out your hearts before him.^[f]
God is our shelter. (Selah)
⁹Men are nothing but a mere breath;
human beings are unreliable.^[g]
When they are weighed in the scales,
all of them together are lighter than air.^[h]
¹⁰Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression.^[i]
Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery.^[j]
If wealth increases, do not become attached to it.^[k]
¹¹God has declared one principle;
two principles I have heard:^[l]
God is strong,^[m]
¹²and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love.^[n]
For you repay men for what they do.^[o]

Psalm 62:5 tn Heb “only for God be silent, my soul.” The wording is similar to that of v. 1a. Here an imperatival form, דּוֹמִּי (dommi, “be silent”), appears instead of the noun דּוּמִיָּה (dumiyyah, “silence”). The psalmist is encouraging himself to maintain his trust in God.
Psalm 62:5 tn Heb “for from him [is] my hope.”
Psalm 62:6 tn Heb “my high rocky summit.”
Psalm 62:6 tn Or “my elevated place” (see Ps 18:2).
Psalm 62:7 tn Heb “upon God [is] my deliverance and my glory, the high rocky summit of my strength, my shelter [is] in God.”
Psalm 62:8 tn To “pour out one’s heart” means to offer up to God intense, emotional lamentation and petitionary prayers (see Lam 2:19).
Psalm 62:9 tn Heb “only a breath [are] the sons of mankind, a lie [are] the sons of man.” The phrases “sons of mankind” and “sons of man” also appear together in Ps 49:2. Because of the parallel line there, where “rich and poor” are mentioned, a number of interpreters and translators treat these expressions as polar opposites, בְּנֵי אָדָם (b^ene ʾadam) referring to the lower classes and בְּנֵי אִישׁ (b^ene ʾish) to higher classes. But usage does not support such a view. The rare phrase בְּנֵי אִישׁ (“sons of man”) appears to refer to human beings in general in its other uses (see Pss 4:2; Lam 3:33). It is better to understand the phrases as synonymous expressions.
Psalm 62:9 tn The noun הֶבֶל (hevel), translated “a breath” earlier in the verse, appears again here.
Psalm 62:10 tn Heb “do not trust in oppression.” Here “oppression” stands by metonymy for the riches that can be gained by oppressive measures, as the final line of the verse indicates.
Psalm 62:10 tn Heb “and in robbery do not place vain hope.” Here “robbery” stands by metonymy for the riches that can be gained by theft, as the next line of the verse indicates.
Psalm 62:10 tn Heb “[as for] wealth, when it bears fruit, do not set [your] heart [on it].”
Psalm 62:11 tn Heb “one God spoke, two which I heard.” This is a numerical saying utilizing the “x” followed by “x + 1” pattern to facilitate poetic parallelism. (See W. M. W. Roth, Numerical Sayings in the Old Testament [VTSup], 55-56.) As is typical in such sayings, a list corresponding to the second number (in this case “two”) follows. Another option is to translate, “God has spoken once, twice [he has spoken] that which I have heard.” The terms אַחַת (ʾakhat, “one; once”) and שְׁתַיִם (sh^etayim, “two; twice”) are also juxtaposed in 2 Kgs 6:10 (where they refer to an action that was done more than “once or twice”) and in Job 33:14 (where they refer to God speaking “one way” and then in “another manner”).
Psalm 62:11 tn Heb “that strength [belongs] to God.”
Psalm 62:12 tn Heb “and to you, O Master, [is] loyal love.”
Psalm 62:12 tn Heb “for you pay back to a man according to his deed.” Another option is to understand vv. 11b and 12a as the first principle and v. 12b as the second. In this case one might translate, “God has declared one principle, two principles I have heard, namely, that God is strong, and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love, and that you repay men for what they do.”sn You repay men for what they do. The psalmist views God’s justice as a demonstration of both his power (see v. 11c) and his loyal love (see v. 12a). When God judges evildoers, he demonstrates loyal love to his people.

Jeremiah 20:14-18

¹⁴Cursed be the day I was born!
May that day not be blessed when my mother gave birth to me.^[a]
¹⁵Cursed be the man
who made my father very glad
when he brought him the news
that a baby boy had been born to him!^[b]
¹⁶May that man be like the cities^[c]
that the Lord destroyed without showing any mercy.
May he hear a cry of distress in the morning
and a battle cry at noon.
¹⁷For he did not kill me before I came from the womb,
making my pregnant mother’s womb my grave forever.^[d]
¹⁸Why did I ever come forth from my mother’s womb?
All I experience is trouble and grief,
and I spend my days in shame.^[e]

Luke 10:13-16

¹³“Woe to you, Chorazin!^[a] Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if^[b] the miracles^[c] done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,^[d] they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.^[e] ¹⁴But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon^[f] in the judgment than for you! ¹⁵And you, Capernaum,^[g] will you be exalted to heaven?^[h] No, you will be thrown down to Hades!^[i]

¹⁶“The one who listens^[j] to you listens to me,^[k] and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects^[l] the one who sent me.”^[m]

Luke 10:13 sn Chorazin was a town of Galilee that was probably fairly small in contrast to Bethsaida and is otherwise unattested. Bethsaida was more significant; it was declared a polis (“city”) by the tetrarch Herod Philip, sometime after a.d. 30.

Luke 10:13 sn Tyre and Sidon are two other notorious OT cities (Isa 23; Jer 25:22; 47:4). The remark is a severe rebuke, in effect: “Even the hardened sinners of the old era would have responded to the proclamation of the kingdom and repented, unlike you!”
Luke 10:13 sn To clothe oneself in sackcloth and ashes was a public sign of mourning or lament, in this case for past behavior and associated with repentance.
Luke 10:14 sn Jesus’ general point is that in the day of judgment the Gentile cities will come off better than the cities of Galilee. This is not to indicate toleration for the sins of the Gentile cities, but to show how badly the judgment will go for the Galilean ones. In the OT prophetic oracles were pronounced repeatedly against Tyre and Sidon: Isa 23:1-18; Ezek 26:1-28:26; Joel 4:4; Zech 9:2-4.
Luke 10:15 sn Capernaum was a town located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, 680 ft (204 m) below sea level. It existed since Hasmonean times and was a major trade and economic center in the North Galilean region. The population in the first century is estimated to be around 1,500. Capernaum became the hub of operations for Jesus’ Galilean ministry (Matt 4:13; Mark 2:1). In modern times the site was discovered in 1838 by the American explorer E. Robinson, and major excavations began in 1905 by German archaeologists H. Kohl and C. Watzinger. Not until 1968, however, were remains from the time of Jesus visible; in that year V. Corbo and S. Loffreda began a series of annual archaeological campaigns that lasted until 1985. This work uncovered what is thought to be the house of Simon Peter as well as ruins of the first century synagogue beneath the later synagogue from the fourth or fifth century A.D. Today gently rolling hills and date palms frame the first century site, a favorite tourist destination of visitors to the Galilee.
