Jonah 3:10-4:11

10 When God saw their actions—that they turned from their evil way of living.[a]—God relented concerning the judgment[b] he had threatened them with[c] and did not destroy them.[d]

Jonah Responds to God’s Kindness

This displeased Jonah terribly[e] and he became very angry.[f] He prayed to the Lord and said, “Oh, Lord, this is just what I thought[g] would happen[h] when I was in my own country.[i] This is what I tried to prevent[j] by attempting to escape to Tarshish,[k] because I knew[l] that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger[m] and abounding[n] in mercy, and one who relents concerning threatened judgment.[o] So now, Lord, kill me instead,[p] because I would rather die than live!”[q] The Lord said, “Are you really so very[r] angry?”[s]

Jonah left the city and sat down east[t] of it.[u] He made a shelter for himself there and sat down under it in the shade to see what would happen to the city.[v] The Lord God appointed[w] a little plant[x] and caused it to grow up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to rescue[y] him from his misery.[z] Now Jonah was very delighted[aa] about the little plant.

So God sent[ab] a worm at dawn the next day, and it attacked the little plant so that it dried up. When the sun began to shine, God sent[ac] a hot[ad] east wind. So the sun beat down[ae] on Jonah’s head, and he grew faint. So he despaired of life[af] and said, “I would rather die than live!”[ag]

God said to Jonah, “Are you really so very angry[ah] about the little plant?” And he said, “I am as angry[ai] as I could possibly be!”[aj] 10 The Lord said, “You were upset[ak] about this little[al] plant, something for which you did not work, nor did you do anything to make it grow. It grew up overnight and died the next day.[am] 11 Should I[an] not be more[ao] concerned[ap] about Nineveh, this enormous city?[aq] There are more than 120,000 people in it who do not know right from wrong,[ar] as well as many animals.”[as]

Psalm 145:1-8

Psalm 145[a]

A psalm of praise; by David.

145 I will extol you, my God, O King.
I will praise your name continually.[b]
Every day I will praise you.
I will praise your name continually.[c]
The Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise.
No one can fathom his greatness.[d]
One generation will praise your deeds to another,
and tell about your mighty acts.[e]
I will focus on your honor and majestic splendor,
and your amazing deeds.[f]
They will proclaim[g] the power of your awesome acts.
I will declare your great deeds.
They will talk about the fame of your great kindness,[h]
and sing about your justice.[i]
The Lord is merciful and compassionate;
he is patient[j] and demonstrates great loyal love.[k]

Philippians 1:21-30

21 For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. 22 Now if I am to go on living in the body,[a] this will mean productive work[b] for me, yet I don’t know which I prefer:[c] 23 I feel torn between the two,[d] because I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far, 24 but it is more vital for your sake that I remain[e] in the body.[f] 25 And since I am sure of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for the sake of your progress[g] and joy in the faith,[h] 26 so that what you can be proud of may increase[i] because of me in Christ Jesus, when I come back to you.[j]

27 Only conduct yourselves[k] in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ so that—whether I come and see you or whether I remain absent—I should hear that[l] you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, by contending side by side for the faith of the gospel,[m] 28 and by not being intimidated in any way by your opponents. This is[n] a sign of their[o] destruction, but of your salvation—a sign which[p] is from God. 29 For it has been granted to you[q] not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are encountering[r] the same conflict that you saw me face and now hear that I am facing.[s]

Matthew 20:1-16

Workers in the Vineyard

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner[a] who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage,[b] he sent them into his vineyard. When it was about nine o’clock in the morning,[c] he went out again and saw others standing around in the marketplace[d] without work. He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and I will give you whatever is right.’ So they went. When[e] he went out again about noon and three o’clock that afternoon,[f] he did the same thing. And about five o’clock that afternoon[g] he went out and found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why are you standing here all day without work?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go and work in the vineyard too.’ When[h] it was evening[i] the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages[j] starting with the last hired until the first.’ When those hired about five o’clock came, each received a full day’s pay.[k] 10 And when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each one also received the standard wage. 11 When[l] they received it, they began to complain[m] against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last fellows worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who bore the hardship and burning heat of the day.’ 13 And the landowner[n] replied to one of them,[o] ‘Friend, I am not treating you unfairly. Didn’t you agree with me to work for the standard wage?[p] 14 Take what is yours and go. I[q] want to give to this last man[r] the same as I gave to you. 15 Am I not[s] permitted to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’[t] 16 So the last will be first, and the first last.”
