Isaiah 51:1-6

Jerusalem Will Be Saved

51 The Lord says, “Listen to me,
    those of you who ·try to live right [L pursue righteousness] and ·follow [seek] the Lord.
Look ·at [or to] the rock from which you were cut;
    look ·at [or to] the stone quarry from which you were dug [C referring to their ancestors Abraham and Sarah; see v. 2].
Look at Abraham, your ·ancestor [father],
    and Sarah, who gave birth to ·your ancestors [L you].
Abraham ·had no children [was just one person; L was one] when I called him [Gen. 12:1–3],
    but I blessed him and ·gave him many descendants [L made him many].
So the Lord will comfort ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple];
    he will ·show mercy to [comfort] ·those who live in [L all] her ruins.
He will change her ·deserts [wilderness] into ·a garden like Eden [L Eden];
    he will make her ·empty lands [desert; arid plains] like the garden of the Lord.
·People there will be very happy [L Joy and gladness will be found in her];
    ·they will give thanks and sing songs [L thanksgiving and the voice of song].

“My people, listen to me;
    my nation, pay attention to me.
·I will give the people my teachings [L Law/Instruction/Torah will go out from me],
    and my ·decisions [justice] will be like a light to the ·people [nations].
·I will soon show that I do what is right [L My righteousness/justice draws near].
    ·I will soon save you [L My salvation goes out].
    ·I will use my power and [L My arms will] judge the nations.
The ·faraway places [or islands; or coastlands] are ·waiting for [looking to; hoping in] me;
    they wait for my ·power to help them [L arm].
·Look up [L Lift your eyes] to the heavens [40:26].
    Look at the earth below.
The skies will disappear like clouds of smoke.
    The earth will ·become useless [wear out] like old clothes [Ps. 102:26],
    and its people will die like flies.
But my salvation will continue forever,
    and my ·goodness [righteousness] will never end.

Psalm 138

A Hymn of Thanksgiving

A psalm of David.

138 Lord, I will ·thank [praise] you with all my heart;
    I will ·sing [make a psalm] to you before the gods.
I will bow down facing your holy Temple,
    and I will ·thank [praise] ·you [L your name] for your ·love [loyalty] and ·loyalty [faithfulness].
You have ·made your name and your word
    greater than anything [L exalted your word above all your name].
On the day I ·called [prayed] to you, you answered me.
    You ·made me strong and brave [L have emboldened/encouraged my soul with strength].

Lord, let all the kings of the earth ·praise [thank] you
    when they hear the words ·you speak [L of your mouth].
They will sing about ·what the Lord has done [L the way of the Lord],
    because the Lord’s glory [C his manifest presence] is great.

Though the Lord is ·supreme [exalted],
    he ·takes care of [looks on] ·those who are humble [the lowly],
    but he ·stays away from the proud [L perceives the proud from far away].
Lord, ·even when I have trouble all around me [L if I walk in the midst of distress],
    you will keep me alive.
When my enemies are angry,
    you will ·reach down [L send out your hand] and save me by your ·power [L right hand].
Lord, you ·do everything [fulfill/accomplish your plan] for me.
    Lord, your ·love [loyalty] continues forever.
Do not ·leave [abandon; forsake] us, ·whom you made [L the work of your hands].

Romans 12:1-8

Give Your Lives to God

12 ·So [Therefore] brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I ·beg [urge; appeal to] you to offer your ·lives [selves; L bodies] as a living sacrifice to him. Your offering must be ·only for God [holy] and pleasing to him, which is the ·spiritual [or authentic; true; or appropriate; fitting; or rational; reasonable] way for you to worship. Do not be ·shaped by [conformed to; pressed into a mold by] this ·world [age]; instead be ·changed within [transformed] by ·a new way of thinking [or changing the way you think; L the renewing of your mind]. Then you will be able to ·decide [discern; test and approve] what ·God wants for you [is God’s will]; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. Because God has given me ·a special gift [his grace], I have something to say to everyone among you. Do not think you are better than you are. [Instead] You must ·decide what you really are [think sensibly; think with sober discernment] ·by [based on; in accordance with] the amount of faith God has given you. [L For just as] Each one of us has ·a [L one] body with many parts, and these parts all have different ·uses [functions]. In the same way, we are many, but in Christ we are all one body, and each part belongs to all the other ·parts [L members]. We all have different gifts, each of which came because of the grace God gave us. The person who has the gift of prophecy should use that gift ·in agreement with the faith [or in proportion to their faith]. Anyone who has the gift of serving should serve. Anyone who has the gift of teaching should teach. Whoever has the gift of ·encouraging [exhorting] others should ·encourage [exhort]. Whoever has the gift of giving to others should give ·freely [generously]. Anyone who has the gift of being a leader should ·try hard when he leads [lead diligently/enthusiastically]. Whoever has the gift of showing mercy to others should do so with ·joy [cheerfulness].

Matthew 16:13-20

Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ(A)

13 When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi [C 25 miles north of Lake Galilee near Mount Hermon], he asked his ·followers [disciples], “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah [C some Jews expected Elijah to return in the end times; Mal. 4:5], and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets [Deut. 18:15].”

15 Then Jesus asked them, “·And [But] who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the ·Christ [Messiah], the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because ·no person taught you that [L flesh and blood did not reveal this to you]. [L But; Rather] My Father in heaven ·showed you who I am [revealed it]. 18 So I tell you, you are Peter [C the Greek petros, like the Aramaic cephas, means “rock” or “stone”]. On this rock I will build my church, and the ·power of death [L gates of Hades/the underworld] will not be able to ·defeat [overpower; conquer; prevail against] it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; ·the things [and whatever] you ·don’t allow [forbid; L bind] on earth will be ·the things that God does not allow [forbidden/L bound in heaven], and ·the things [whatever] you ·allow [permit; L loose] on earth will be ·the things that God allows [permitted/L loosed in heaven].” 20 Then Jesus [sternly] warned his ·followers [disciples] not to tell anyone he was the ·Christ [Messiah].
