Chapter 12

“Leave Your Country [and] Your People.”[c]The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people, and the house of your father, and go to the land to which I will lead you.

“I will make of you a great
    people and I will bless you.
I will make your name great
    and it will become a blessing.
I will bless those who bless
    you and curse those who curse you.
And through you
    all the nations on the earth shall be blessed.”

Abram therefore departed, just as the Lord had ordered him. Lot went along with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.

Psalm 121

God, Guardian of His People

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains;[b]
    from where will I receive help?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.[c]
He will not permit your foot to stumble;
    he who guards you will not fall asleep.[d]
Indeed, the one who guards Israel
    never slumbers, never sleeps.[e]
[f]The Lord serves as your guardian;
    he is at your right hand to serve as your shade.
The sun will not strike you during the day,
    nor the moon during the night.
[g]The Lord will protect you against all evil;
    he will watch over your life.
The Lord will watch over your coming and your going
    both now and forevermore.

Romans 4:1-5

Abraham Justified through Faith[a]

Chapter 4

Justified through Faith, Not Works.[b] What then are we to say about Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? If Abraham was justified by the works he did, he has good reason to boast, but not in the eyes of God. For what does Scripture say? “Abraham placed his faith in God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[c]

Now when a man works, his wages are not regarded as a gift but as something that is due to him. However, when someone who does not work places his faith in one who justifies the godless, such faith is reckoned as righteousness.

Romans 4:13-17

13 Justified Apart from the Law.[a] It was not through the Law that Abraham and his descendants received the promise that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 If those who live by the Law are the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the Law produces only wrath, and where no Law exists, there cannot be any violation.

16 Therefore, the promise depends on faith, so that it may be a free gift and the promise may be guaranteed to all descendants, not only to the adherents of the Law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham. For he is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations,” in the sight of God in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not exist.

John 3:1-17

Chapter 3

Nicodemus Goes To Visit Jesus. There was a man from the Pharisees named Nicodemus,[a] a member of the Jewish ruling council, who came to Jesus at night. “Rabbi,” he said, “we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one would be able to perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.” Jesus replied,

“Amen, amen, I say to you,
no one can see the kingdom of God[b]
without being born from above.”

Nicodemus asked, “How can a man be born again once he is old? Is it possible for him to enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus said,

“Amen, amen, I say to you,
no one can enter the kingdom of God
unless he is born of water and the Spirit.[c]
What is born of the flesh is flesh,
and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
“You should not be astonished when I say,
‘You must be born from above.’
The wind blows where it chooses,
and you hear the sound of it,
but you do not know where it comes from
or where it goes.
So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

“How is this possible?” asked Nicodemus. 10 Jesus responded, “You are a teacher of Israel and you do not know these things?

11 “Amen, amen, I say to you,
we speak of what we know
and we testify to what we have seen,
and yet you do not accept our testimony.
12 If I tell you about earthly things
and you do not believe,
how will you believe
when I speak to you about heavenly things?

Jesus Christ, Savior and Judge[d]

13 “No one has gone up to heaven
except the one who descended from heaven,
the Son of Man.
14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up,[e]
15 in order that everyone who believes in him
may have eternal life.
16 “For God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
may not perish
but may attain eternal life.
17 “For God did not send his Son into the world
to condemn the world
but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Matthew 17:1-9

Chapter 17

Jesus Is Transfigured.[a] Six days later, Jesus took Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain[b] by themselves. And in their presence he was transfigured; his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will make three tents here—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud cast a shadow over them. Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were greatly frightened. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Stand up, and do not be frightened.” And when they raised their eyes, they saw no one, but only Jesus.

Elijah Has Already Come.[c] As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
