Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
5 How blessed is the one whose helper is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
6 the one who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who remains forever faithful,[a]
7 vindicates the oppressed,[b]
and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord releases the imprisoned.
8 The Lord gives sight to the blind.
The Lord lifts up all who are bent over.[c]
The Lord loves the godly.
9 The Lord protects the resident foreigner.
He lifts up the fatherless and the widow,[d]
but he opposes the wicked.[e]
10 The Lord rules forever,
your God, O Zion, throughout the generations to come.[f]
Praise the Lord!
6 So she decided to return home from the region of Moab, accompanied by her daughters-in-law,[a] because while she was living in Moab[b] she had heard that the Lord had shown concern for[c] his people, reversing the famine by providing abundant crops.[d]
Ruth Returns with Naomi
7 Now as she and her two daughters-in-law began to leave the place where she had been living to return to the land of Judah,[e] 8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Listen to me! Each of you should return to your mother’s home.[f] May the Lord show[g] you[h] the same kind of devotion that you have shown to your deceased husbands[i] and to me.[j] 9 May the Lord enable each of you to find[k] security[l] in the home of a new husband.”[m] Then she kissed them goodbye, and they wept loudly.[n] 10 But they said to her, “No![o] We will[p] return with you to your people.”
11 But Naomi replied, “Go back home, my daughters! There is no reason for you to return to Judah with me.[q] I am no longer capable of giving birth to sons who might become your husbands![r] 12 Go back home, my daughters! For I am too old to get married again.[s] Even if I thought that there was hope that I could get married tonight and conceive sons,[t] 13 surely you would not want to wait until they were old enough to marry.[u] Surely you would not remain unmarried all that time![v] No,[w] my daughters, you must not return with me.[x] For my intense suffering[y] is too much for you to bear.[z] For the Lord is afflicting me!”[aa]
14 Again they wept loudly.[ab] Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye,[ac] but Ruth[ad] clung tightly to her.[ae] 15 So Naomi[af] said, “Look, your sister-in-law is returning to her people and to her god.[ag] Follow your sister-in-law back home!” 16 But Ruth replied,
“Stop urging me to abandon you![ah]
For wherever you go, I will go.
Wherever you live, I will live.
Your people will become my people,
and your God will become my God.
17 Wherever you die, I will die—and there I will be buried.
May the Lord punish me severely if I do not keep my promise![ai]
Only death will be able to separate me from you!”[aj]
18 When Naomi[ak] realized that Ruth[al] was determined to go with her, she stopped trying to dissuade her.[am]
The False Teachers’ Denial of the Lord’s Return
3 Dear friends, this is already the second letter I have written[a] you, in which[b] I am trying to stir up[c] your pure mind by way of reminder: 2 I want you to recall[d] both[e] the predictions[f] foretold by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles.[g] 3 Above all, understand this:[h] In the last days blatant scoffers[i] will come, being propelled by their own evil urges[j] 4 and saying,[k] “Where is his promised return?[l] For ever since[m] our ancestors[n] died,[o] all things have continued as they were[p] from the beginning of creation.” 5 For they deliberately suppress this fact,[q] that by the word of God[r] heavens existed long ago and an earth[s] was formed out of water and by means of water. 6 Through these things[t] the world existing at that time was destroyed when it was deluged with water. 7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, by being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.[u]
8 Now, dear friends, do not let this one thing escape your notice,[v] that a single day is like a thousand years with the Lord and a thousand years are like a single day. 9 The Lord is not slow concerning his promise,[w] as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not wish[x] for any[y] to perish but for all to come to repentance.[z] 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; when it comes,[aa] the heavens will disappear[ab] with a horrific noise,[ac] and the celestial bodies[ad] will melt away[ae] in a blaze,[af] and the earth and every deed done on it[ag] will be laid bare.[ah]
