Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 64[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
64 Listen to me,[b] O God, as I offer my lament!
Protect[c] my life from the enemy’s terrifying attacks.[d]
2 Hide me from the plots of evil men,
from the crowd of evildoers.[e]
3 They[f] sharpen their tongues like swords;
they aim their arrows, a slanderous charge,[g]
4 in order to shoot down the innocent[h] in secluded places.
They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation.[i]
5 They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed.[j]
They plan how to hide[k] snares,
and boast,[l] “Who will see them?”[m]
6 They devise[n] unjust schemes;
they disguise[o] a well-conceived plot.[p]
Man’s inner thoughts cannot be discovered.[q]
7 But God will shoot[r] at them;
suddenly they will be[s] wounded by an arrow.[t]
8 Their slander will bring about their demise.[u]
All who see them will shudder,[v]
9 and all people will fear.[w]
They will proclaim what God has done,[x]
and reflect on his deeds.
10 The godly will rejoice in the Lord
and take shelter in him.
All the morally upright[y] will boast.[z]
Bildad’s Second Speech[a]
18 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:
2 “How long until you[b] make an end of words?[c]
You must consider,[d] and then[e] we can talk.
3 Why should we be regarded as beasts,
and considered stupid[f] in your sight?
4 You who tear yourself[g] to pieces in your anger,
will the earth be abandoned[h] for your sake?
Or will a rock be moved from its place?[i]
5 “Yes,[j] the lamp[k] of the wicked is extinguished;
his flame of fire[l] does not shine.
6 The light in his tent grows dark;
his lamp above him is extinguished.[m]
7 His vigorous steps[n] are restricted,[o]
and his own counsel throws him down.[p]
8 For he has been thrown into a net by his feet[q]
and he wanders into a mesh.[r]
9 A trap[s] seizes him by the heel;
a snare[t] grips him.
10 A rope is hidden for him[u] on the ground
and a trap for him[v] lies on the path.
11 Terrors[w] frighten him on all sides
and dog[x] his every step.
12 Calamity is[y] hungry for him,[z]
and misfortune is ready at his side.[aa]
13 It eats away parts of his skin;[ab]
the most terrible death[ac] devours his limbs.
14 He is dragged from the security of his tent,[ad]
and marched off[ae] to the king of terrors.[af]
15 Fire resides in his tent;[ag]
over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.
16 Below his roots dry up,
and his branches wither above.
17 His memory perishes from the earth,
he has no name in the land.[ah]
18 He is driven[ai] from light into darkness
and is banished from the world.
19 He has neither children nor descendants[aj] among his people,
no survivor in those places he once stayed.[ak]
20 People of the west[al] are appalled at his fate;[am]
people of the east are seized with horror,[an] saying,[ao]
21 ‘Surely such is the residence[ap] of an evil man;
and this is the place of one who has not known God.’”[aq]
The Message of the Cross
18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.”[a] 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law?[b] Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. 22 For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, 23 but we preach about a crucified Christ,[c] a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 24 But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,[d] and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.[e]
26 Think about the circumstances of your call,[f] brothers and sisters.[g] Not many were wise by human standards,[h] not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position.[i] 27 But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. 28 God chose[j] what is low and despised in the world, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, 29 so that no one can boast in his presence. 30 He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus,[k] who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”[l]
