Isaiah’s Commission
6 In the year of King Uzziah’s death,[a] I saw the Lord[b] seated on a high, elevated throne. The hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs[c] stood over him; each one had six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet,[d] and they used the remaining two to fly. 3 They called out to one another, “Holy, holy, holy[e] is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies![f] His majestic splendor fills the entire earth!” 4 The sound of their voices shook the door frames,[g] and the temple was filled with smoke.
5 I said, “Woe to me! I am destroyed,[h] for my lips are contaminated by sin,[i] and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin.[j] My eyes have seen the king, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”[k] 6 But then one of the seraphs flew toward me. In his hand was a hot coal he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with it and said, “Look, this coal has touched your lips. Your evil is removed; your sin is forgiven.”[l] 8 I heard the voice of the Lord say, “Whom will I send? Who will go on our behalf?”[m] I answered, “Here I am, send me!”
9 He said, “Go and tell these people:
“‘Listen continually, but don’t understand.
Look continually, but don’t perceive.’
10 Make the hearts of these people calloused;
make their ears deaf and their eyes blind.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed.”[a]
11 I replied, “How long, Lord?” He said,
“Until cities are in ruins and unpopulated,
and houses are uninhabited,
and the land is ruined and devastated,
12 and the Lord has sent the people off to a distant place,
and the very heart of the land is completely abandoned.[b]
13 Even if only a tenth of the people remain in the land,
it will again be destroyed,[c]
like one of the large sacred trees[d] or an Asherah pole,[e]
when a sacred pillar[f] on a high place[g] is thrown down.[h]
That sacred pillar symbolizes the special chosen family.”[i]

138 I will give you thanks with all my heart;
before the heavenly assembly[b] I will sing praises to you.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple,
and give thanks to your name,
because of your loyal love and faithfulness,
for you have exalted your promise above the entire sky.[c]
3 When[d] I cried out for help, you answered me.
You made me bold and energized me.[e]
4 Let all the kings of the earth give thanks[f] to you, O Lord,
when they hear the words you speak.[g]
5 Let them sing about the Lord’s deeds,[h]
for the Lord’s splendor is magnificent.[i]
6 Though the Lord is exalted, he looks after the lowly,
and from far away humbles[j] the proud.
7 Even when I must walk in the midst of danger,[k] you revive me.
You oppose my angry enemies,[l]
and your right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord avenges me.[m]
O Lord, your loyal love endures.
Do not abandon those whom you have made.[n]
Christ’s Resurrection
15 Now I want to make clear for you,[a] brothers and sisters,[b] the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I passed on to you as of first importance[c] what I also received—that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised[d] on the third day according to the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[e] then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than 500 of the brothers and sisters[f] at one time, most of whom are still alive,[g] though some have fallen asleep.[h] 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as though to one born at the wrong time,[i] he appeared to me also. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been in vain. In fact, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, this is the way we preach and this is the way you believed.
The Call of the Disciples
5 Now[a] Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[b] and the crowd was pressing around him[c] to hear the word of God. 2 He[d] saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 He got into[e] one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then[f] Jesus[g] sat down[h] and taught the crowds from the boat.[i] 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and lower[j] your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon[k] answered,[l] “Master,[m] we worked hard all night and caught nothing! But at your word[n] I will lower[o] the nets.” 6 When[p] they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets started to tear.[q] 7 So[r] they motioned[s] to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they were about to sink.[t] 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord,[u] for I am a sinful man!”[v] 9 For[w] Peter[x] and all who were with him were astonished[y] at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, Zebedee’s sons, who were Simon’s business partners.[z] Then[aa] Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on[ab] you will be catching people!”[ac] 11 So[ad] when they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed[ae] him.
