Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Fellowship of the Early Believers
42 They were devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,[a] to the breaking of bread and to prayer.[b] 43 Reverential awe[c] came over everyone,[d] and many wonders and miraculous signs[e] came about by the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and held[f] everything in common, 45 and they began selling[g] their property[h] and possessions and distributing the proceeds[i] to everyone, as anyone had need. 46 Every day[j] they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts,[k] breaking bread from[l] house to house, sharing their food with glad[m] and humble hearts,[n] 47 praising God and having the good will[o] of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every day[p] those who were being saved.
Psalm 23[a]
A psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd,[b]
I lack nothing.[c]
2 He takes me to lush pastures,[d]
he leads me to refreshing water.[e]
3 He restores my strength.[f]
He leads me down[g] the right paths[h]
for the sake of his reputation.[i]
4 Even when I must walk through the darkest valley,[j]
I fear[k] no danger,[l]
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff reassure me.[m]
5 You prepare a feast before me[n]
in plain sight of my enemies.
You refresh[o] my head with oil;
my cup is completely full.[p]
6 Surely your goodness and faithfulness[q] will pursue[r] me all my days,[s]
and I will live in[t] the Lord’s house[u] for the rest of my life.[v]
19 For this finds God’s favor,[a] if because of conscience toward God[b] someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? But if you do good and suffer and so endure, this finds favor with God.[c] 21 For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps. 22 He[d] committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth.[e] 23 When he was maligned, he[f] did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatened[g] no retaliation,[h] but committed himself to God[i] who judges justly. 24 He[j] himself bore our sins[k] in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning[l] and live for righteousness. By his[m] wounds[n] you were healed.[o] 25 For you were going astray like sheep[p] but now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
Jesus as the Good Shepherd
10 “I tell you the solemn truth,[a] the one who does not enter the sheepfold[b] by the door,[c] but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The doorkeeper[d] opens the door[e] for him,[f] and the sheep hear his voice. He[g] calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.[h] 4 When he has brought all his own sheep[i] out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize[j] his voice. 5 They will never follow a stranger,[k] but will run away from him, because they do not recognize[l] the stranger’s voice.”[m] 6 Jesus told them this parable,[n] but they[o] did not understand[p] what he was saying to them.
7 So Jesus said again, “I tell you the solemn truth,[q] I am the door for the sheep.[r] 8 All who came before me were[s] thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.[t] 9 I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will come in and go out,[u] and find pasture.[v] 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill[w] and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.[x]
