Acts 2:14

Peter’s Address on the Day of Pentecost

14 But Peter stood up[a] with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: “You men of Judea[b] and all you who live in Jerusalem, know this[c] and listen carefully to what I say.

Acts 2:22-32

22 “Men of Israel,[a] listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds,[b] wonders, and miraculous signs[c] that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know— 23 this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed[d] by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.[e] 24 But God raised him up,[f] having released[g] him from the pains[h] of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.[i] 25 For David says about him,

I saw the Lord always in front of me,[j]
for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced;
my body[k] also will live in hope,
27 because you will not leave my soul in Hades,[l]
nor permit your Holy One to experience[m] decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of joy with your presence.’[n]

29 “Brothers,[o] I can speak confidently[p] to you about our forefather[q] David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 So then, because[r] he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants[s] on his throne,[t] 31 David by foreseeing this[u] spoke about the resurrection of the Christ,[v] that he was neither abandoned to Hades,[w] nor did his body[x] experience[y] decay.[z] 32 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.[aa]

Psalm 16

Psalm 16[a]

A prayer[b] of David.

16 Protect me, O God, for I have taken shelter in you.[c]
I say to the Lord, “You are the Lord,
my only source of well-being.”[d]
As for God’s chosen people who are in the land,
and the leading officials I admired so much[e]
their troubles multiply;
they desire other gods.[f]
I will not pour out drink offerings of blood to their gods,[g]
nor will I make vows in the name of their gods.[h]
Lord, you give me stability and prosperity;[i]
you make my future secure.[j]
It is as if I have been given fertile fields
or received a beautiful tract of land.[k]
I will praise[l] the Lord who[m] guides[n] me;
yes, during the night I reflect and learn.[o]
I constantly trust in the Lord;[p]
because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
So my heart rejoices
and I am happy;[q]
my life is safe.[r]
10 You will not abandon me[s] to Sheol;[t]
you will not allow your faithful follower[u] to see[v] the Pit.[w]
11 You lead me in[x] the path of life.[y]
I experience absolute joy in your presence;[z]
you always give me sheer delight.[aa]

1 Peter 1:3-9

New Birth to Joy and Holiness

Blessed be[a] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is,[b] into[c] an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you, who by God’s power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. This brings you great joy,[d] although you may have to suffer[e] for a short time in various trials. Such trials show the proven character of your faith,[f] which is much more valuable than gold—gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away[g]—and will bring praise[h] and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.[i] You[j] have not seen him, but you love him. You[k] do not see him now but you believe in him, and so you rejoice[l] with an indescribable and glorious[m] joy, because you are attaining the goal of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

John 20:19-31

Jesus’ Appearance to the Disciples

19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the disciples had gathered together[a] and locked the doors[b] of the place[c] because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.[d] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.[e] 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you.” 22 And after he said this, he breathed on them and said,[f] “Receive the Holy Spirit.[g] 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven;[h] if you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained.”[i]

The Response of Thomas

24 Now Thomas (called Didymus),[j] one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied,[k] “Unless I see the wounds[l] from the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the wounds from the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe it!”[m]

26 Eight days later the disciples were again together in the house,[n] and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked,[o] Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put[p] your finger here, and examine[q] my hands. Extend[r] your hand and put it[s] into my side. Do not continue in your unbelief, but believe.”[t] 28 Thomas replied to him,[u] “My Lord and my God!”[v] 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are the people[w] who have not seen and yet have believed.”[x]

30 Now Jesus performed[y] many other miraculous signs in the presence of the[z] disciples, which are not recorded[aa] in this book.[ab] 31 But these[ac] are recorded[ad] so that you may believe[ae] that Jesus is the Christ,[af] the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.[ag]
