Chapter 9

The Prince of Peace[a]

The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
    and given them great joy;
they rejoice before you
    as those who rejoice at the harvest,
    as they exult when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
and the rod of their oppressor
    you have broken as on the day of Midian.[b]
For every boot of a warrior that tramped in battle
    and every garment soaked in blood
    will be burned as fuel for the fire.

Psalm 27:1

Psalm 27[a]

Trust in God, Our Light and Salvation

Of David.

The Lord is my light[b] and my salvation;
    whom should I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom should I be afraid?

Psalm 27:4-9

There is only one thing I ask of the Lord,
    just one thing I seek:
to dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
so that I may enjoy the beauty of the Lord[a]
    and gaze on his temple.
For he will hide me in his shelter
    in times of trouble.
He will conceal me under the cover of his tent[b]
    and place me high upon a rock.
Even now my head is raised high
    above my enemies who surround me.
In his tent I will offer sacrifices[c] with joyous shouts;
    I will sing and chant praise to the Lord.
Lord, hear my voice when I cry out;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart[d] says of you,
    “Seek his face.”
It is your face, O Lord, that I seek;
    do not hide your face[e] from me.
Do not turn away your servant in anger,
    you who have been my help.
Do not reject or forsake me,
    O God, my Savior.

1 Corinthians 1:10-18

Divisions in the Church of Corinth[a]

10 The Existence of Factions. Brethren, I exhort you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to be in full agreement with one another and not permit any divisions to arise among you. Be perfectly united in mind and purpose. 11 For I have heard reports from Chloe’s people, brethren, that there are quarrels among you.[b]

12 What I mean is that each of you is asserting, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,”[c] or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” 13 Has Christ now been divided? Did Paul die on the cross for you? Was it in Paul’s name that you were baptized?

14 I am thankful that I never baptized any of you, aside from Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one can say you were baptized in my name. ( 16 I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Aside from those I do not know if I baptized anyone else.)

17 The Message of the Cross and Human Wisdom.[d] For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel—and to do so without words of human wisdom lest the cross of Christ be devoid of its meaning. 18 Indeed, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Matthew 4:12-23

12 Jesus Begins His Ministry in Galilee.[a]When Jesus learned that John had been arrested,[b] he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Departing from Nazareth, he settled in Capernaum[c] by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 in order that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
    the passageway to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles:
16 The people who lived in darkness
    have seen a great light,
    and for those who dwell in a land darkened by the shadow of death
    light has dawned.”

17 From that day forward Jesus began to proclaim the message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.”

18 Jesus Calls the First Disciples.[d] As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the water, for they were fishermen. 19 He said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately, they abandoned their nets and followed him.

21 As he proceeded farther, he saw two more brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately, they left their boat and their father and followed him.

23 Jesus Proclaims the Message and Heals the Sick.[e] Jesus traveled all throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every type of disease and illness among the people.
