Version
Psalm 123

Psalm 123[a]

A song of ascents.[b]

123 I look up[c] toward you,
the one enthroned[d] in heaven.
Look, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female servant look to the hand of her mistress,[e]
so our eyes will look to the Lord, our God, until he shows us favor.
Show us favor, O Lord, show us favor!
For we have had our fill of humiliation, and then some.[f]
We have had our fill[g]
of the taunts of the self-assured,
of the contempt of the proud.

Job 25-26

Bildad’s Third Speech[a]

25 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:

“Dominion[b] and awesome might[c] belong to[d] God;
he establishes peace in his heights.[e]
Can his armies be numbered?[f]
On whom does his light[g] not rise?
How then can a human being be righteous before God?
How can one born of a woman be pure?[h]
If even the moon is not bright,
and the stars are not pure as far as he is concerned,[i]
how much less a mortal man, who is but a maggot[j]
a son of man, who is only a worm!”

Job’s Reply to Bildad[k]

26 Then Job replied:

“How you have helped[l] the powerless![m]
How you have saved the person who has no strength![n]
How you have advised the one without wisdom,
and abundantly[o] revealed your insight!
To whom[p] did you utter these words?
And whose spirit has come forth from your mouth?[q]

A Better Description of God’s Greatness[r]

“The dead[s] tremble[t]
those beneath the waters
and all that live in them.[u]
The underworld[v] is naked before God;[w]
the place of destruction lies uncovered.[x]
He spreads out the northern skies[y] over empty space;[z]
he suspends the earth on nothing.[aa]
He locks the waters in his clouds,
and the clouds do not burst with the weight of them.
He conceals[ab] the face of the full moon,[ac]
shrouding it with his clouds.
10 He marks out the horizon[ad] on the surface of the waters
as a boundary between light and darkness.
11 The pillars[ae] of the heavens tremble
and are amazed at his rebuke.[af]
12 By his power he stills[ag] the sea;
by his wisdom he cut Rahab the great sea monster[ah] to pieces.[ai]
13 By his breath[aj] the skies became fair;
his hand pierced the fleeing serpent.[ak]
14 Indeed, these are but the outer fringes of his ways![al]
How faint is the whisper[am] we hear of him!
But who can understand the thunder of his power?”

John 5:19-29

19 So Jesus answered them,[a] “I tell you the solemn truth,[b] the Son can do nothing on his own initiative,[c] but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[d] does, the Son does likewise.[e] 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does, and will show him greater deeds than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,[f] so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.[g] 22 Furthermore, the Father does not judge[h] anyone, but has assigned[i] all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all people[j] will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

24 “I tell you the solemn truth,[k] the one who hears[l] my message[m] and believes the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned,[n] but has crossed over from death to life. 25 I tell you the solemn truth,[o] a time[p] is coming—and is now here—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, thus he has granted the Son to have life in himself, 27 and he has granted the Son[q] authority to execute judgment,[r] because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, because a time[s] is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out—the ones who have done what is good to the resurrection resulting in life, and the ones who have done what is evil to the resurrection resulting in condemnation.[t]
