Psalm 62

Psalm 62[a]

For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David.

62 For God alone I patiently wait;[b]
he is the one who delivers me.[c]
He alone is my protector[d] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[e] I will not be upended.[f]
How long will you threaten[g] a man like me?
All of you are murderers,[h]
as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence.[i]
They[j] spend all their time planning how to bring their victim[k] down.[l]
They love to use deceit;[m]
they pronounce blessings with their mouths,
but inwardly they utter curses.[n] (Selah)
Patiently wait for God alone, my soul![o]
For he is the one who gives me hope.[p]
He alone is my protector[q] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[r] I will not be shaken.
God delivers me and exalts me;
God is my strong protector and my shelter.[s]
Trust in him at all times, you people!
Pour out your hearts before him.[t]
God is our shelter. (Selah)
Men are nothing but a mere breath;
human beings are unreliable.[u]
When they are weighed in the scales,
all of them together are lighter than air.[v]
10 Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression.[w]
Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery.[x]
If wealth increases, do not become attached to it.[y]
11 God has declared one principle;
two principles I have heard:[z]
God is strong,[aa]
12 and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love.[ab]
For you repay men for what they do.[ac]

Hosea 12:2-14

The Lord also has a covenant lawsuit[a] against Judah;
he will punish Jacob according to his ways
and repay him according to his deeds.

Israel Must Return to the God of Jacob

In the womb he attacked his brother;
in his manly vigor he struggled[b] with God.
He struggled[c] with an angel and prevailed;
he wept and begged for his favor.
He found God[d] at Bethel,
and there he spoke with him![e]
As for the Lord God Almighty,
the Lord is the name by which he is remembered![f]
But you must return[g] to your God,
by maintaining love and justice
and by waiting[h] for your God to return to you.[i]

The Lord Refutes Israel’s False Claim of Innocence

The businessmen love to cheat;[j]
they use dishonest scales.[k]
Ephraim boasts,[l] “I am very rich!
I have become wealthy![m]
In all that I have done to gain my wealth,[n]
no one can accuse me of any offense[o] that is actually sinful.”[p]
“I am the Lord your God[q] who brought you[r] out of Egypt;
I will make you live in tents again as in the days of old.[s]
10 I spoke to the prophets;
I myself revealed many visions;[t]
I spoke in parables[u] through[v] the prophets.”
11 Is there idolatry[w] in Gilead?[x]
Certainly its inhabitants[y] will come to nothing![z]
Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?
Surely their altars will be like stones heaped up on a plowed field!

Jacob in Aram, Israel in Egypt, and Ephraim in Trouble

12 Jacob fled to the country of Aram,
then Israel worked[aa] to acquire a wife;
he tended sheep to pay for her.
13 The Lord brought Israel out of Egypt by a prophet,
and due to a prophet[ab] Israel[ac] was preserved alive.[ad]
14 But Ephraim bitterly[ae] provoked him to anger;
so he will hold him accountable for the blood he has shed,[af]
his Lord[ag] will repay him for the contempt he has shown.[ah]

Matthew 19:16-22

The Rich Young Man

16 Now[a] someone came up to him and said, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to gain eternal life?”[b] 17 He said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” he asked. Jesus replied, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,[c] and love your neighbor as yourself.”[d] 20 The young man said to him, “I have wholeheartedly obeyed[e] all these laws.[f] What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money[g] to the poor, and you will have treasure[h] in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich.[i]
