Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
מ (Mem)
97 O how I love your law!
All day long I meditate on it.
98 Your commandments[a] make me wiser than my enemies,
for I am always aware of them.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your rules.
100 I am more discerning than those older than I,
for I observe your precepts.
101 I stay away[b] from every evil path,
so that I might keep your instructions.[c]
102 I do not turn aside from your regulations,
for you teach me.
103 Your words are sweeter
in my mouth than honey![d]
104 Your precepts give me discernment.
Therefore I hate all deceitful actions.[e]
The Advice of Jethro
18 [a] Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard about all that God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, that[b] the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.[c]
2 Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Moses’ wife Zipporah after he had sent her back, 3 and her two sons, one of whom was named Gershom[d] (for Moses[e] had said, “I have been a foreigner[f] in a foreign land”) 4 and the other Eliezer (for Moses had said,[g] “The God of my father has been my help[h] and delivered[i] me from the sword of Pharaoh”).
5 Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’[j] sons and his wife, came to Moses in the wilderness where he was camping by[k] the mountain of God.[l] 6 He said[m] to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you, along with your wife and her two sons with her.” 7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him;[n] they each asked about the other’s welfare, and then they went into the tent. 8 Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to Egypt for Israel’s sake, and all the hardship[o] that had come on them[p] along the way, and how[q] the Lord had delivered them.
9 Jethro rejoiced[r] because of all the good that the Lord had done for Israel, whom he had delivered from the hand of Egypt. 10 Jethro said, “Blessed[s] be the Lord who has delivered you from the hand of Egypt, and from the hand of Pharaoh, who has delivered the people from the Egyptians’ control![t] 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods, for in the thing in which they dealt proudly against them he has destroyed them.”[u] 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought[v] a burnt offering and sacrifices for God,[w] and Aaron and all the elders of Israel came to eat food[x] with the father-in-law of Moses before God.
27 God wanted to make known to them the glorious[a] riches of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 We proclaim him by instructing[b] and teaching[c] all people[d] with all wisdom so that we may present every person mature[e] in Christ. 29 Toward this goal[f] I also labor, struggling according to his power that powerfully[g] works in me.
2 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you,[h] and for those in Laodicea, and for those who have not met me face to face.[i] 2 My goal is that[j] their hearts, having been knit together[k] in love, may be encouraged, and that[l] they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ,[m] 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I say this so that no one will deceive you through arguments[n] that sound reasonable.[o] 5 For though[p] I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, rejoicing to see[q] your morale[r] and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
Warnings Against the Adoption of False Philosophies
6 Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,[s] continue to live your lives[t] in him, 7 rooted[u] and built up in him and firm[v] in your[w] faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
