Isaiah 49:1-7

49 1 The Lord God exhorteth all nations to believe his promises. 6 Christ is the salvation of all that believe, and will deliver them from the tyranny of their enemies.

Hear ye me, O isles, and hearken, ye people from far. The Lord hath called [a]me from [b]the womb, and made mention of my name from my mother’s belly.

And he hath made my mouth like a sharp [c]sword: under the shadow of his hand hath he [d]hid me, and made me a chosen shaft, and hid me in his quiver,

And said unto me, Thou art my servant [e]Israel, for I will be glorious in thee.

And I said, I have [f]labored in vain: I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing; but my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

And now saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, that I may bring Jacob again to him (though Israel be not gathered, [g]yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord; and my God shall be my strength.)

And he said, It is a small thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the desolations of Israel: I will also give [h]thee for a light of the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the world.

Thus saith the Lord the redeemer of Israel, and his holy One, to him that is despised in soul, to a nation that is abhorred, to a [i]servant of rulers, Kings shall see, and [j]arise, and princes shall worship, because of the Lord, that is faithful: and the holy One of Israel, which hath chosen thee.

Psalm 71:1-14

71 He prayeth in faith, established by the word of promise, 5 And confirmed by the work of God from his youth. 10 He complaineth of the cruelty of his enemies, 17 And desireth God to continue his graces toward him, 22 Promising to be mindful and thankful for the same.

In (A)[a]thee, O Lord, I trust: let me never be ashamed.

Rescue me and deliver me in thy [b]righteousness: incline thine ear unto me and save me.

Be thou my strong rock, whereunto I may always resort: thou [c]hast given commandment to save me: for thou art my rock, and my fortress.

Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand [d]of the wicked: out of the hand of the evil and cruel man.

For thou art mine hope, O Lord God, even my [e]trust from my youth.

Upon thee have I been stayed from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be always of thee.

I am become as it were a [f]monster unto many: but thou art my sure trust.

Let my mouth be filled with thy praise, and with thy glory every day.

Cast me not off in the time of [g]age: forsake me not when my strength faileth.

10 For mine enemies speak of me, and they that lay wait for my soul, take their counsel together,

11 Saying, [h]God hath forsaken him: pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him.

12 Go not far from me, O God: [i]my God haste thee to help me.

13 Let them be confounded and consumed that are against my soul: let them be covered with reproof and confusion, that seek mine hurt.

14 But I will wait continually, and will praise thee more and more.

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

18 For that [a]preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness: but unto us, which are saved, it is the (A)[b]power of God.

19 [c]For it is written, (B)I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will cast away the understanding of the prudent.

20 Where is the wise? where is the [d]Scribe? where is the [e]disputer of this world? hath not God made the wisdom of this world foolishness?

21 [f]For seeing the [g]world by wisdom knew not God in the [h]wisdom of GOD, [i]it pleased God by the [j]foolishness of preaching to save them that believe:

22 (C)[k]Seeing also that the Jews require a sign, and the Grecians seek after wisdom.

23 But we preach Christ crucified: unto the Jews, even a stumbling block, and unto the Grecians, foolishness:

24 But unto them which are called, both of the Jews and Grecians, we preach Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 [l]For brethren, you see your [m]calling, how that not many wise men [n]after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called.

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world, to confound the mighty things,

28 And vile things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, and things which [o]are not, to bring to [p]nought things that are.

29 That no [q]flesh should rejoice in his presence.

30 But ye are [r]of him in Christ Jesus, [s]who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.

31 That, according as it is written, (D)[t]He that rejoiceth, let him rejoice in the Lord.

John 12:20-36

20 ¶ Now there were certain Greeks among them that [a]came up to worship at the feast.

21 And they came to Philip, which was of Bethsaida in Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see that Jesus.

22 Philip came and told Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man must be glorified.

24 [b]Verily, verily I say unto you, Except the wheat corn fall into the ground and [c]die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

25 (A)He that loveth his life, shall lose it, and he that hateth his life in this world, shall keep it unto life eternal.

26 (B)If any man serve me, let him follow me: for where I am, there shall my servant be: and if any man serve me, him will my father honor.

27 [d]Now is my soul troubled: and what shall I say? Father, save me from this [e]hour: but therefore came I unto this hour.

28 Father, [f]glorify thy Name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29 Then said the people that stood by, and heard, that it was a thunder: others said, An Angel spake to him.

30 [g]Jesus answered, and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32 (C)And I, if I were [h]lift up from the earth, will draw [i]all men unto me.

33 Now this said he, signifying what death he should die.

34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the (D)Law, that that Christ bideth forever: and how sayest thou, that that Son of man must be lift up? Who is that Son of man?

35 [j]Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is (E)the light with you: walk while ye have that light, lest the darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in the dark, knoweth not whither he goeth.

36 While ye have that light, believe in that light, that ye may be the [k]children of the light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and hid himself from them.
