Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
42 1 The obedience and humility of Christ. 6 Why he was sent into the world. 11 The vocation of the Gentiles.
1 Behold, [a]my servant: [b]I will stay upon him: mine elect, in whom my soul [c]delighteth: I have put my Spirit upon him: he shall bring forth [d]judgment to the Gentiles.
2 He shall not [e]cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
3 A [f]bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking [g]flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment in [h]truth.
4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged till he have [i]set judgment in the earth: and the [j]isles shall wait for his Law.
5 Thus saith God the Lord (he that created the heavens and spread them abroad: he that stretched forth the earth, and the buds thereof: he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein)
6 I the Lord have called thee in [k]righteousness, and will hold [l]thine hand, and I will keep thee, and give thee for a [m]covenant of the people, and for a light of the Gentiles,
7 That thou mayest open the eyes of the blind, and bring out the prisoners from the prison: and them that sit in darkness, out of the prison house.
8 I am the Lord, this is my Name, and my [n]glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
9 Behold, the former things are [o]come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they come forth, I tell you of them.
5 Thy [a]mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens, and thy faithfulness unto the clouds.
6 Thy righteousness is like the [b]mighty mountains: thy judgments are like a great [c]deep: thou Lord, dost save man and beast.
7 How excellent is thy mercy, O God! therefore the children of men trust under the shadow of thy wings.
8 They shall be [d]satisfied with the fatness of thine house, and thou shalt give them drink out of the river of thy pleasures.
9 For with thee is the well of life, and in thy light shall we see light.
10 Extend thy loving-kindness unto them that [e]know thee, and thy righteousness unto them that are upright in heart.
11 Let not the [f]foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked men move me.
11 [a]But Christ being come an high Priest of good things to come, [b]by a [c]greater and a more perfect Tabernacle, not made with hands, that is, not of this building,
12 [d]Neither by the blood of [e]goats and calves: but by his own blood entered he in once unto the holy place, and obtained eternal redemption for us.
13 (A)[f]For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer, sprinkling them that are unclean, sanctifieth as touching the [g]purifying of the flesh,
14 How much more shall the (B)blood of Christ which through the eternal Spirit offered himself without fault to God, (C)purge your conscience from [h]dead works, to serve the living God?
15 [i]And for this cause is he the Mediator of the new Testament, that through (D)death which was for the redemption of the transgressions that were in the former Testament, they which were called, might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
12 2 As Christ is at supper with Lazarus, 3 Mary anointeth his feet. 5 Judas findeth fault with her. 7 Christ defendeth her. 10 The Priests would put Lazarus to death. 12 As Christ cometh to Jerusalem. 18 The people meet him. 22 The Greeks desire to see him. 42 The chief rulers that believe in him, but for fear do not confess him, 44 he exhorteth to faith.
1 Then (A)Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who died, whom he had raised from the dead.
2 There they made him a supper, and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of Spikenard very costly, and anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the savor of the ointment.
4 Then said one of his disciples, even Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him:
5 [a]Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
6 Now he said thus, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and (B)had the bag, and bore that which was given.
7 [b]Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying she kept it.
8 For the poor always ye have with you, but me ye shall not have always.
9 [c]Then much people of the Jews knew that he was there: and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 The high Priests therefore consulted, that they might put Lazarus to death also,
11 because that for his sake many of the Jews went away, and believed in Jesus.
