39 1 David uttereth with what great grief and bitterness of mind he was driven to these outrageous complaints of his infirmities. 2 For he confesseth that when he had determined silence, that he brast forth yet into words, that he would not, through the greatness of his grief. 4 Then he rehearseth certain requests which taste of the infirmity of man. 8 And mixeth with them many prayers: but all do show a mind wonderfully trembled, that it may plainly appear how he did strive mightily against death and desperation.

1 I thought, [b]I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth bridled, while the wicked is in my sight.
2 I was dumb and spake nothing: I kept silence even from good, [c]and my sorrow was more stirred.
3 Mine heart was hot within me, and while I was musing, the fire kindled, and I [d]spake with my tongue, saying,
4 Lord, let me know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: let me know how long I have to live.
5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an hand breadth, and mine age as nothing in respect of thee: surely every man in his best state is altogether [e]vanity. Selah.
6 Doubtless man walketh in a shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain: he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them.
7 And now Lord, what wait I for? mine hope is even in thee.
8 Deliver me from all my transgressions, and make me not a rebuke unto the [f]foolish.
9 I should have been dumb, and not have opened my mouth, because [g]thou didst it.
10 Take thy plague away from me: for I am consumed by the stroke of thine hand.
11 When thou with rebukes dost chastise man for iniquity, thou as a moth [h]makest his [i]beauty to consume: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and hearken unto my cry: keep not silence at my tears, for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner as all my fathers.
13 Stay thine anger from me, that I may recover my strength, [j]before I go hence and be not.
17 These are the names of the [a]men, which Moses sent to spy out the land: and Moses called the name of Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
18 So Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way toward the South, and go up into the [b]mountains.
19 And consider the land what it is, and the people that dwell therein, whether they be strong, or weak, either few or many.
20 Also what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be [c]good or bad: and what cities they be, that they dwell in, whether they dwell in tents, or in walled towns.
21 And what the land is: whether it be fat or lean, whether there be trees therein, or not. And be of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land (for then was the time of the first ripe grapes.)
22 ¶ So they went up, and searched out the land, from the wilderness of [d]Zin unto Rehob, to go to Hamath.
23 And they ascended toward the South, and came unto Hebron, where were Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the sons of [e]Anak. And [f]Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.
24 (A)Then they came to the river of Eshcol, and cut down thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it upon a bar between two, and brought of the pomegranates and of the figs.
25 That place was called the [g]river Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes, which the children of Israel cut down thence.
26 Then after forty days they turned again from searching of the land.
27 And they went and came to Moses and to Aaron, and unto all the Congregation of the children of Israel, in the wilderness of [h]Paran, to Kadesh, and brought to them, and to all the Congregation tidings, and showed them the fruit of the land.
18 ¶ (A)Then said he, What is the kingdom of God like? or whereto shall I compare it?
19 [a]It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew, and waxed a great tree, and the fowls of the heaven made nests in the branches thereof.
20 ¶ (B)And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
21 It is like leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three pecks of flour, till all was leavened.
