Psalm 1

Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)

Psalm 1[a]

How blessed[b] is the one[c] who does not follow[d] the advice[e] of the wicked,[f]
or stand in the pathway[g] with sinners,
or sit in the assembly[h] of scoffers.[i]
Instead[j] he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;[k]
he meditates on[l] his commands[m] day and night.
He is like[n] a tree planted by flowing streams;[o]
it[p] yields[q] its fruit at the proper time,[r]
and its leaves never fall off.[s]
He succeeds in everything he attempts.[t]
Not so with the wicked!
Instead[u] they are like wind-driven chaff.[v]
For this reason[w] the wicked cannot withstand[x] judgment,[y]
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.[z]
Certainly[aa] the Lord guards the way of the godly,[ab]
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.[ac]

Jeremiah 13:12-19

12 “So tell them,[a] ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Every wine jar is made to be filled with wine.”’[b] And they will probably say to you, ‘Do you not think we know[c] that every wine jar is supposed to be filled with wine?’ 13 Then[d] tell them, ‘The Lord says: “I will soon fill all the people who live in this land with stupor.[e] I will also fill the kings from David’s dynasty,[f] the priests, the prophets, and the citizens of Jerusalem with stupor.[g] 14 And I will smash them like wine bottles against one another, children and parents alike.[h] I will not show any pity, mercy, or compassion. Nothing will keep me from destroying them,’[i] says the Lord.”

15 Then I said to the people of Judah:[j]

“Listen and pay attention! Do not be arrogant!
For the Lord has spoken.
16 Show the Lord your God the respect that is due him.[k]
Do it before he brings the darkness of disaster.[l]
Do it before you stumble[m] into distress
like a traveler on the mountains at twilight.[n]
Do it before he turns the light of deliverance you hope for
into the darkness and gloom of exile.[o]
17 But if you will not pay attention to this warning,[p]
I will weep alone because of your arrogant pride.
I will weep bitterly, and my eyes will overflow with tears[q]
because you, the Lord’s flock,[r] will be carried into exile.”[s]

18 The Lord told me:[t]

“Tell the king and the queen mother,
‘Surrender your thrones,[u]
for your glorious crowns
will be removed[v] from your heads.[w]
19 The gates of the towns in southern Judah will be shut tight.[x]
No one will be able to go in or out of them.[y]
All Judah will be carried off into exile.
They will be completely carried off into exile.’”[z]

Acts 13:26-34

26 Brothers,[a] descendants[b] of Abraham’s family,[c] and those Gentiles among you who fear God,[d] the message[e] of this salvation has been sent to us. 27 For the people who live in Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize[f] him,[g] and they fulfilled the sayings[h] of the prophets that are read every Sabbath by condemning[i] him.[j] 28 Though[k] they found[l] no basis[m] for a death sentence,[n] they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When they had accomplished[o] everything that was written[p] about him, they took him down[q] from the cross[r] and placed him[s] in a tomb. 30 But God raised[t] him from the dead, 31 and[u] for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied[v] him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These[w] are now his witnesses to the people. 32 And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors,[x] 33 that this promise[y] God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising[z] Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, ‘You are my Son;[aa] today I have fathered you.’[ab] 34 But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesus[ac] from the dead, never[ad] again to be[ae] in a state of decay, God[af] has spoken in this way: ‘I will give you[ag] the holy and trustworthy promises[ah] made to David.’[ai]
