Psalm 138

Psalm 138[a]

By David.

138 I will give you thanks with all my heart;
before the heavenly assembly[b] I will sing praises to you.
I will bow down toward your holy temple,
and give thanks to your name,
because of your loyal love and faithfulness,
for you have exalted your promise above the entire sky.[c]
When[d] I cried out for help, you answered me.
You made me bold and energized me.[e]
Let all the kings of the earth give thanks[f] to you, O Lord,
when they hear the words you speak.[g]
Let them sing about the Lord’s deeds,[h]
for the Lord’s splendor is magnificent.[i]
Though the Lord is exalted, he looks after the lowly,
and from far away humbles[j] the proud.
Even when I must walk in the midst of danger,[k] you revive me.
You oppose my angry enemies,[l]
and your right hand delivers me.
The Lord avenges me.[m]
O Lord, your loyal love endures.
Do not abandon those whom you have made.[n]

Judges 3:7-11

Othniel: A Model Leader

The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight.[a] They forgot the Lord their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.[b] The Lord was furious with Israel[c] and turned them over to[d] King Cushan Rishathaim[e] of Armon Haraim.[f] They were Cushan Rishathaim’s subjects[g] for eight years. When the Israelites cried out for help to the Lord, he[h] raised up a deliverer for the Israelites who rescued[i] them. His name was Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.[j] 10 The Lord’s Spirit empowered him[k] and he led Israel. When he went to do battle, the Lord handed over to him King Cushan Rishathaim of Armon[l] and he overpowered him.[m] 11 The land had rest for forty years; then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

Luke 4:42-44

42 The next morning[a] Jesus[b] departed and went to a deserted place. Yet[c] the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But Jesus[d] said to them, “I must[e] proclaim the good news of the kingdom[f] of God to the other towns[g] too, for that is what I was sent[h] to do.”[i] 44 So[j] he continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.[k]
