Psalm 37:23-40

23 The (A)steps of a man are (B)established by the Lord,
    when he delights in his way;
24 (C)though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
    for the Lord (D)upholds his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old,
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
    or his children (E)begging for bread.
26 He is ever (F)lending generously,
    and his children become a blessing.

27 (G)Turn away from evil and do good;
    so shall you (H)dwell forever.
28 For the Lord (I)loves justice;
    he will not forsake his (J)saints.
They are preserved forever,
    but the children of the wicked shall be (K)cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land
    and (L)dwell upon it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
    and his tongue speaks justice.
31 (M)The law of his God is in his heart;
    his (N)steps do not slip.

32 The wicked (O)watches for the righteous
    and seeks to put him to death.
33 The Lord will not (P)abandon him to his power
    or let him (Q)be condemned when he is brought to trial.

34 (R)Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
    and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
    you will look on (S)when the wicked are cut off.

35 (T)I have seen a wicked, ruthless man,
    spreading himself like (U)a green laurel tree.[a]
36 But he passed away,[b] and behold, (V)he was no more;
    though I sought him, he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright,
    for there is a future for the man of (W)peace.
38 But (X)transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
    the future of the wicked (Y)shall be cut off.

39 (Z)The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in (AA)the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and (AB)delivers them;
    (AC)he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
    because they (AD)take refuge in him.

1 Samuel 8:1-18

Israel Demands a King

When Samuel became old, (A)he made his sons judges over Israel. The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. Yet his sons did not walk in his ways (B)but turned aside after gain. (C)They took bribes and perverted justice.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at (D)Ramah and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. (E)Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, (F)for they have not rejected you, (G)but they have rejected me from being king over them. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them (H)and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”

Samuel's Warning Against Kings

10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him. 11 He said, (I)“These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: (J)he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. 12 And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some (K)to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 (L)He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. 15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. 16 He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men[a] and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, (M)but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

Hebrews 6:1-12

Therefore (A)let us leave (B)the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance (C)from dead works and of faith toward God, and of (D)instruction about washings,[a] (E)the laying on of hands, (F)the resurrection of the dead, and (G)eternal judgment. And this we will do (H)if God permits. For it is impossible, in the case of those (I)who have once been enlightened, who have tasted (J)the heavenly gift, and (K)have shared in the Holy Spirit, and (L)have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and (M)then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since (N)they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. For (O)land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But (P)if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, (Q)and its end is to be burned.

Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. 10 For (R)God is not unjust so as to overlook (S)your work and the love that you have shown for his name in (T)serving the saints, as you still do. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance (U)of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but (V)imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
