Book Five
Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So
107 (A)Oh give thanks to the Lord, (B)for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let (C)the redeemed of the Lord say so,
whom he has (D)redeemed from trouble[a]
3 and (E)gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4 Some (F)wandered in desert wastes,
finding no way (G)to a city to dwell in;
5 hungry and thirsty,
their soul (H)fainted within them.
6 Then they (I)cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by (J)a straight way
till they reached (K)a city to dwell in.
8 (L)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
9 For he (M)satisfies the longing soul,
(N)and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
10 (O)Some sat in darkness and in (P)the shadow of death,
prisoners in (Q)affliction and in irons,
11 for they (R)had rebelled against the words of God,
and (S)spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
they fell down, (T)with none to help.
13 (U)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of (V)darkness and the shadow of death,
and (W)burst their bonds apart.
15 (X)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16 For he (Y)shatters the doors of bronze
and cuts in two the bars of iron.
The Death of Miriam
20 And the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came (A)into the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. And (B)Miriam died there and was buried there.
The Waters of Meribah
2 (C)Now there was no water for the congregation. (D)And they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. 3 And the people (E)quarreled with Moses and said, “Would that we had perished (F)when our brothers perished before the Lord! 4 Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? 5 And (G)why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.” 6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and (H)fell on their faces. (I)And the glory of the Lord appeared to them, 7 and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 8 (J)“Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So (K)you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” 9 And Moses took the staff (L)from before the Lord, as he commanded him.
Moses Strikes the Rock
10 Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, (M)“Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, (N)and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. 12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because (O)you did not believe in me, (P)to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” 13 (Q)These are the waters of Meribah,[a] where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy.
6 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as (A)they did. 7 (B)Do not be idolaters (C)as some of them were; as it is written, (D)“The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8 (E)We must not indulge in sexual immorality (F)as some of them did, and (G)twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put Christ[a] to the test, (H)as some of them did and (I)were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, (J)as some of them did and (K)were destroyed by (L)the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but (M)they were written down for our instruction, (N)on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore (O)let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. (P)God is faithful, and (Q)he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
