Worship in the Splendour of Holiness
96 (A)Oh sing to the Lord (B)a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
(C)tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvellous works among all the peoples!
4 For (D)great is the Lord, and (E)greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above (F)all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord (G)made the heavens.
6 Splendour and majesty are before him;
(H)strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the Lord, O (I)families of the peoples,
(J)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
8 Ascribe to the Lord (K)the glory due his name;
bring (L)an offering, and (M)come into his courts!
9 Worship the Lord in (N)the splendour of holiness;[a]
(O)tremble before him, all the earth!
10 Say among the nations, (A)“The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will (B)judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let (C)the heavens be glad, and let (D)the earth rejoice;
let (E)the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let (F)the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all (G)the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes (H)to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.
Laws Concerning Israel's Kings
14 “When you come to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, (A)‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me’, 15 you may indeed set a king over you (B)whom the Lord your God will choose. One (C)from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. 16 Only he must not acquire many (D)horses for himself or cause the people (E)to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you, (F)‘You shall never return that way again.’ 17 And he (G)shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, (H)nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.
18 “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, (I)he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, (J)approved by[a] the Levitical priests. 19 And (K)it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, (L)that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, 20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he (M)may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, (N)so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.
Shepherd the Flock of God
5 So I exhort the elders among you, (A)as a fellow elder and (B)a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 (C)shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,[a] (D)not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;[b] (E)not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not (F)domineering over those in your charge, but (G)being examples to the flock. 4 And when (H)the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the (I)unfading (J)crown of glory. 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. (K)Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another, for (L)“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
