Psalm 114

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

114 When (A)Israel went out from Egypt,
    the house of Jacob from (B)a people of strange language,
Judah became his (C)sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.
(D)The sea looked and fled;
    (E)Jordan turned back.
(F)The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.
What (G)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
    O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
    O hills, like lambs?
(H)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns (I)the rock into (J)a pool of water,
    (K)the flint into a spring of water.

Jonah 2

Jonah's Prayer

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying,

(A)“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
    and he answered me;
(B)out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
    (C)and you heard my voice.
(D)For you cast me into the deep,
    into the heart of the seas,
    and the flood surrounded me;
(E)all your waves and your billows
    passed over me.
(F)Then I said, ‘I am driven away
    from your sight;
(G)yet I shall again look
    upon your holy temple.’
(H)The waters closed in over me (I)to take my life;
    the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped about my head
    at the roots of the mountains.
I went down to the land
    whose bars closed upon me for ever;
yet you brought up my life from the pit,
    O Lord my God.
When my life was fainting away,
    I remembered the Lord,
(J)and my prayer came to you,
    into your holy temple.
(K)Those who pay regard to vain idols
    (L)forsake their hope of steadfast love.
(M)But I with the voice of thanksgiving
    will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
    (N)Salvation belongs to the Lord!”

10 And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

Matthew 12:38-42

The Sign of Jonah

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, (A)we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, (B)“An evil and (C)adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For (D)just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, (E)so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 (F)The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and (G)condemn it, for (H)they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, (I)something greater than Jonah is here. 42 (J)The queen of the South will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, (K)something greater than Solomon is here.
